Tanzania 0-0 Kenya
The Kenyans continually found themselves frustrated |
Tanzania were forced to settle for a goalless draw with Kenya in World Cup preliminary qualifying in Dar es Salaam. The Taifa Stars started brightly, forcing the first corner kick in the second minute of the game and managed to get three more corners within the first five minutes.
But the Harambee Stars soon began launching their own counter-attacks in a fast-paced encounter, nearly going ahead on 23 minutes after a shot skidded just wide of the Tanzanian goal.
Barely a minute later Tanzania retaliated, good build-up play leading to Joseph Kaniki's close-range shot. Sadly for the Taifa Stars striker, however, the ball shot over the bar.
Tanzania continued to create good chances, but their well-placed strikers continued to be denied by the Kenyan goalkeeper, who was well shielded by centre defender Musa Otieno.
A sizable audience that turned out to support the Taifa Stars, in an indication of new hope within the country's soccer fraternity.
Coach Hafid Badru attributed his team's performance to a short period of time the team stayed in the camp.
Unlike Kenya, all his players come from the local super league - and he said he hence expected them to be in top form.
Meanwhile Kenya coach Jacob "Ghost" Mulee admitted his team had played below expectations.
He added that many players are in bad shape due to the fact that the local league in Kenya has just started, and praised the Tanzanian side, saying they had played well.
The two teams will meet again in a month's time in Kenya, the result of which will decide which team goes into the World Cup qualifiers proper.
