Cameroon defender Pierre Wome made a dream debut for Espanyol on the opening weekend of a brand new La Liga season.

He scored with a deflected free-kick in a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad.

His fellow-Cameroonian, Samuel Eto'o Fils scored from the penalty spot for Mallorca but his side lost 2-1 to Racing Santander.

Italy

A new season also got underway in Italy and there was just one African goal in Serie A.

Ivorian striker Axel Konan scored for newly-promoted Lecce in their 4-1 defeat to Lazio.

France

Two Ivorians - Bonaventure Kalou and Dagui Bakari - continued their goal-scoring habits in the French first division.

Kalou scored the winning goal for Auxerre as they beat Rennes 2-1. Rennes' goal came from their Gabonese teenager Stephan Nguema.

Moumouni Dagano
Dagano scored his first goal in French football
Bakari's first goal for Lens was responsible for the 1-0 win over Nice.

Tunisian striker Chaouki Ben Saada scored for Bastia who defeated Toulouse 2-0.

Moumouni Dagano of Burkina Faso scored his first goal in French football since moving from Belgium.

He got the opener as Guingamp defeated defending champions Lyon 2-0.

And Senegal's Mamadou Niang scored twice for Strasbourg in their 3-nil win over Le Mans.

Turkey

Tunisia's Ziad Jaziri scored his first goal for Gaziantepspor who beat Konyaspor 3-1.

The other African on the score-sheet was Cameroon's Emmanuel Owona, but his two goals for Elagzispor were not enough to prevent a 4-3 defeat to Adanaspor.

Holland

South Africa's Stephen Pienaar got Ajax's winner as they beat Zwolle 1-0. It was his first of the season.

Belgium

Guinean internationals Sembegou Bangoura and Aboubacar Fofana got the goals for their respective clubs.

Bangoura fired the winner in Standard Liege's 1-0 win over Lierse, while Fofana scored for Lokeren who drew 1-1 with Mons.

England

Cameroon's Lauren Etame Mayer got his name on the score-sheet in the Premiership, but only after firing the ball past his own goalkeeper.

However, the Indomitable Lions wingback ended the day with a smile as Arsenal beat Manchester City 2-1.
