Ghana's Alberta Sackey Africa's only goal scorer at the Women's World Cup |
African interest at the Women's World Cup in the USA has ended with both Nigeria and Ghana crashing out after the first round matches.
Ghana will be the happier of the two after they secured their first ever win at the finals by beating Australia 2-1 in their last group match.
Nigeria will be very disappointed as they exit the tournament following a hefty 3-0 loss to Sweden.
The Super Falcons finished with the dismal record of losing all three matches without scoring a single goal and conceding a total of 11.
Nigeria would have been hoping for much better after reaching the quarter-finals in 1999.
Nigerian coach Sam Okpodu said after the Sweden match that he felt his players had been affected by their poor performance in their matches against North Korea and the USA and that they failed to fulfill their potential.
Ghana scored their first goals of this World Cup thanks to two from Africa's reigning Women's Footballer of the Year, Alberta Sackey as the Black Queens beat Australia 2-1.
"We had nothing to lose," Sackey said after the victory. "We wanted to win at least one game."
The win is an improvement on the lone draw that Ghana managed against Australia in 1999 when they finished bottom of their group.
