Fortune fell out with Mashaba |
Mark Fish and Quinton Fortune have been left out of South Africa's preliminary squad for next year's African Nations Cup finals. The England-based duo were missing from the 39-man squad announced by Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim 'Shakes' Mashaba in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Fish, the 29-year-old Charlton Athletic defender, has been left out of the South African side for the last three years.
Manchester United midfielder Fortune seems to have paid the price for his refusal to play in recent matches.
Fortune did not respond to call-ups for games against England, the Ivory Coast and Burundi in the last three months.
He also had a fall out with the coach after being branded "disloyal" for pulling out of a match against Jamaica in April with injury and then playing for United a day later.
Mashaba said Fish, who has won 60 caps for South Africa, was not part of his plans for Tunisia 2004.
But the outspoken coach said the list was "not cast in stone, but would form the nucleus of my squad".
A final 22 will be picked on the eve of the Nations Cup finals in January.
