Kenyan fans may have little to cheer about soon |
Kenya has been warned that it will lose its place at next year's Nations Cup unless the country's football federation pays $13,000 it owes to Caf. The continent's ruling body has also said that the Harambee Stars will not be able to contest their World Cup qualifying match against Tanzania next month unless the money is paid.
The warning comes just a day after the Kenya Revenue Authority announced that it had frozen the federation's bank account because of unpaid taxes amounting to more than $10,000.
It is the second time in just over a year that the KFF has had its accounts frozen, prompting the Minister for Sport Najib Balala to urge federation officials to resign.
Kenya Football Federation spokesman John Kariuku confirmed that the money owed to Caf was for unpaid television levies and annual Caf subscriptions.
Kariuki added that there was also growing discontent within the national team because the federations had still not paid the players allowances.
He did not eleborate further on how or when the federation's outstanding debts would be paid.
