Enyimba are on course for a semi-final place |
Fans of Ivorian champions Asec Mimosas went on a rampage in Abidjan after they were beaten 2-0 by Nigeria's Enyimba in Sunday's Group A Champions League tie.
The defeat has effectively ended Asec's chances of qualifying for the semi-final stage, while the Nigerians, currently in second place, remain in contention for the semi-finals.
A small knot of Asec supporters burnt the club's yellow and black flag, to demonstrate their dismay at the team's third defeat in four Champions League games.
The 'Actionnaires,' as Asec supporters are known, also congregated outside the main gates of the stadium to hurl abuse at Asec president Roger Ouegnin.
When Ouegnin attempted to reason with the fans, he was greeted by shouts of 'thief' by supporters, who were restained by heavily armed riot policemen.
Under Ouegnin's leadership, Asec have sold several young players to European clubs without finding adequate replacements, which has annoyed supporters.
Asec looked insipid on their home ground, unlike their Nigerian visitors who produced a tactically brilliant display, defending stoutly and using well-timed counter-attacks.
But despite dominating the game, Enyimba did not open scoring until the 87th minute, when substitute Omolade Ajibade finished off a smooth move.
The winner came through Onyekachi Okonkwo in the 90th minute, which sent the Enyimba bench into a jubilant mood.
If the three-time Nigerian champions get a draw in their next match against Simba in Dar-es-Salaam, they would secure their place in the tournament's last four.
