Uche wants to go Dutch |
Kalu Uche's row with his Polish club escalated on Thursday when Wisla Krakow suspended him for six months. The dispute started when Dutch giants Ajax asked if the Nigerian international was for sale before his contract ran out in 2004.
Ajax were promptly rebuffed, triggering Uche's protest. He is threatening to take the club to Uefa arbitration under a contractual clause which he claims allows him to leave in return for a severance payment.
But Wisla chairman Bogdan Basalaj, himself a member of the Uefa rules committee, rejected Uche's interpretation of the clause in question.
He said it only specifies the maximum penalty for the player breaching the terms of his contract with the Polish champions.
Wisla sources say the club told Ajax they were prepared to negotiate over Uche during next season's winter break, but that the player had refused to wait on the advice of his manager.
He also refused to play in Wisla's 5-2 victory over Omonia Nicosia in the first leg of their Champions League second round qualifier on Wednesday.
"We have suspended Uche for six months after he refused to be selected against Omonia. He has seven days to lodge an appeal," said Basalaj.
Uche played a key role as Krakow beat Germany's Schalke 04 and came close to knocking out Italian side Lazio in last season's Uefa Cup.
