Lauren sticks to his guns
Lauren Etame Mayer
Lauren is happy with his playing schedule
Lauren Etame Mayer believes his decision to quit international football will help prolong his club career.

Mayer, who plays for English Premiership side Arsenal, said his fitness has improved, as an absence from international competition had reduced the number of games he had to play throughout the season.

"I have been suffering from knee and ankle problems so I now have time to recover and prepare myself [for Arsenal games]," the Cameroonian told Arsenal.com, the club's official website.

Mayer, who won two African titles with the Indomitable Lions, as well as the gold medal at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, had few regrets over his decision to concentrate on his English career.

"Sometimes I miss the atmosphere of the national team but I stand by the decision."

The 25-year-old had been critical of Cameroon's football officials after the national team performed poorly at the 2002 World Cup finals.
