New Confederations Cup will replace Cup winners competition |
The Confederation of African Football has embarked on moves to attract sponsorship for its newest club competition. The aim of Caf is to make the Confederations Cup, which will be unveiled at the start of next year, as enticing as the African Champions League.
For the past six years, Caf has organised the Champions League, in which the winner collects $1m.
Talks with major companies has begun and Caf has approached 12 worldwide agencies to buy television and advertising rights.
The Confederations Cup is a fusion of the Cup winners and Caf Cups - a model of Europe's Uefa Cup competition.
This means that the FA Cup winners of all affiliated countries will take part in the competition, including the clubs that are knocked out of the second round of the Champions League.
Team that place third in the Algerian, Tunisian, Moroccan, Egyptian, South African, DR Congo, Angolan, Senegalese, Cameroonian, Ghanaian, Ivorian and Nigerian leagues are allowed to compete in the Confederations Cup.
