Giresse is currently in Morocco |
Former France international Alain Giresse has declared an interest in managing Nigeria's Super Eagles. Nigerian FA official Sulaiman David said Giresse is among the 36 coaches that have applied to lead the Super Eagles to the 2004 Nations Cup in Tunisia.
The 51-year-old Giresse played in the 1982 and 1986 World Cups and coached French clubsides Paris Saint Germain and Toulouse.
He was also linked with the France manager's job, following the dismissal of Roger Lemerre, who had a poor 2002 World Cup in Korea.
Giresse also managed Moroccan club Royal Armed Forces (Far) of Rabat.
Belgian coach George Leekens, who recently coached Algeria, former Turkey coach Mustapha Denizli and Sweden's Roger Palmgren, who worked with Sierra Leone, have also applied for the post.
Former Nigeria captain Christian Chukwu has been in charge of the Super Eagles since August 2002 and is expected to deputise for the new manager.
The FA's technical committee will meet on 31 July to draw up a short list of five coaches that will be interviewed.
"We are challenged by the huge interest of top coaches from around the world to work with us," David said.
"We will do everything to get the very best man for the job."
Dutchman Jo Bonfrere was the last foreign coach to manage Nigeria. He was sacked in 2001 for poor results.
