Telecom's 'golden goal' is disallowed |
Malawi's FA Cup final was abandoned on Sunday, after fans invaded the pitch.
Arch-rivals Bakili Bullets and Mighty Telecom were playing in the second half of extra-time when the incident happened.
Trouble began after Telecom's Muzipasi Mwangode scored a third goal that was disallowed by the referee.
Fans had assumed that Mwangode's 'golden goal' had resulted in victory for Telecom, as the game was tied at 2-2 after 90 minutes.
Police subsequently fired volleys of tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd, who were protesting against the referee's decision.
Some fans set one of the goal nets on fire, while missiles were thrown at the referee.
Three football fans collapsed, while others sustained minor injuries.
Telecom's fans also invaded the VIP stand to grab the trophy, but the Malawi FA vice-president Shameer Suleman took it to safety.
Suleman later said: "We seriously need to sit down and see how we can address this issue, as it's denting our image."
Telecom chairman Humphrey Mvula said the police had overeacted. "I saw no reason for the use of such weaponry," he said.
Sunday's incident comes barely a month after a friendly international between Malawi and Zambia was also abandoned due to crowd trouble.
The Cup sponsors and the FA are yet to decide when the match will be replayed.
