Bonfrere looks elsewhere for a job |
Dutch coach Johannes Bonfrere has resigned as coach of Egyptian side Al Ahly after losing the league title. Ahly lost the title to their arch-rivals Zamalek on a dramatic last match of the season on Friday.
Ahly were leading the league standings for many weeks, but they needed to win on the last day.
But Bonfrere's side lost 1-0 to Enppi, while a Hossam Abdel Monem goal against defending champions Ismaily gave Zamalek the title.
Losing the league was the Dutch coach's latest failure with the 2001 African champions.
The former Nigeria coach failed to successfully defend the Champions League title last year - Zamalek are currently the defending African champions.
After Friday's match, irate fans attacked the team's bus and Bonfrere was shielded by security guards. Police arrested 37 Ahly supporters.
Egyptian legend Mahmoud Al Khattib and Fathi Mabrouk have replaced Bonfrere.
Al Khattib, a former African footballer of the year, and his technical partner must save the season with the only consolation - to win the Egyptian Cup.
On Tuesday, Ahly will play Ittihad in the quarter-finals.
