There has been serious rioting in Cairo |
Uncertainty surrounds the Egyptian league with no clear idea of when it will continue and if it will be completed. Last week's games were postponed on the orders of the Egyptian FA because of tension over the war in Iraq.
The authorities feared that the anti-war protests that have been a regular feature on Egyptian streets could result in riots inside football stadia.
They were especially worried about the Cairo derby between Al Ahly and Zamalek, where passions always run furiously high.
I can confirm that the derby will be played, unless the decision is beyond our hands EFA spokesman Medhat Shalaby |
The EFA postponed the 22nd round of matches - scheduled to be played on 4th April - for two weeks. But they have not explained how that impacts on the rest of the season.
But most fans are more concerned about when they will see the Ahly/Zamalek match.
"I can confirm that the derby will be played," EFA spokesman Medhat Shalaby assured the BBC, but he added, "unless the decision is beyond our hands."
Despite the domestic league being halted, Egyptian clubs are still training hard for continental club competitions.
This weekend Zamalek and Ismailia play in the first round of the Champions League while Baladeyet Al Mehalla are in the Cup Winners Cup.
Meanwhile national team coach Mohsen Saleh has announced that he may call for an early camp to prepare for a friendly match against France at the end of the month.
