Mozambique needed penalties to subdue Lesotho and book a place in the quarter-finals of the Cosafa Castle Cup on Saturday. The two teams had featured in a disappointing goalless draw as the home side played their first game under new Russian coach Viktor Bondarenko,
Mozambique eventually won 5-4 after a controversial penalty shoot out in which four spot kicks had to be retaken.
Mozambican goalkeeper Kapagno and his Lesotho counterpart Thabo Khoboli twice made saves only to be called back by referee Verson Lwanja for moving forward before the kicks were taken.
Lesotho's Lehlohonolo Seema missed his side's fifth kick at the second attempt to hand Mozambique the narrowest of victories.
In normal time Lesotho stifled their hosts, packing the midfield and wasting time at every opportunity.
Mozambique squandered the few decent opportunities they had with Portuguese-based players Avelino and Goncalves Fumo both guilty either side of the break.
Mozambique join holders South Africa, Botswana, Madagascar, Malawi, Swaziland and Zambia in the last eight of southern Africa's annual regional competition.
The last of the first round matches will be played on 20 April when Zimbabwe host Angola in Harare.
