Group summary
South Africa won both their home matches in the toughest of the 13 qualifying pools. But the goalless draw secured in their opening match in Abidjan turned out to be ultimately decisive for the 1996 champions.
Former winners Ivory Coast miss the biennial tournament for the first time since 1982. Burundi were always going to struggle against the 'big boys' and failed to pick up a single point. But, at least, they tried!
