Group summary
Zambia were tipped to qualify from this group without breaking much sweat but Benin decided not to follow the script! The seeds of their success were sown when they thrashed Tanzania 4-0 in their first match. The 3-0 home win over the Zambians on the final day underlined their determination to shake off the 'whipping boys' tag.
Sudan were also fancied to do well but an opening home defeat to Zambia seriously undermined their cause. Tanzania's plight was highlighted by their failure to raise money to travel to Khartoum for their final fixture.
