Tanzanian keeper defects
Rayon Sports
Muya is the hero of Rayon Sports' win over Satellite of Guinea

Former Tanzania number one goalkeeper Chachala Muya will play for Rwanda in the forthcoming African Cup of Nations qualifying matches.

The Tanzanian, who went to Rwanda to play for Rayon Sport FC, changed his nationality and is now the number one choice for the Rwandan national team.

Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam, Muya said Rwanda is a good place for footballers, unlike his mother country.

"After they were impressed by my brilliance, their FA approached me and asked if I was ready to change my nationality and play for the national team, which I accepted."

Muya said that players are paid better paid in Rwanda and have opportunities to realise their football potential.

"In Rwanda when you are capable of playing, you will play and you will be valued for your brilliance," Muya said.

"After qualifying for the Caf Cup quarter-finals, we were welcomed home as heroes and the President called us to the state house to congratulate us."

Doing better

"In Tanzania, players are chosen for the national team not for their football ability but because of their relationships with respective coaches and football association bosses.

"There was a time when a coach asked me to give him money to select me for the national team. I did not have the money, so he did not pick me.

Muya said players who went to Rwanda after being dropped by their clubs in Tanzania are doing far better.

Ephreim Makoye and John Thomas Masamaki, Muya's compatriots, also play for Rayon Sport.

"Makoye was declared unwanted by Simba SC but he is now a leading scorer in the Rwandan league," he said.

Rayon Sport is the only team from the East African region remaining in the continental championship.
