Clubs boycott Sierra Leone FA Cup

Football clubs in Sierra Leone have decided to boycott the country's FA cup competition scheduled to start on Tuesday.

Among the reasons the clubs have given for their decision was that they cannot play during the rainy season to avoid injuries to their players.

Despite this there are now indications that the competition will not commence as planned, the Sierra Leone FA is yet to decide the fate of the competition.

The FA and the clubs have not seen eye to eye for quite some time and it is believed that this also influenced the boycott decision by the clubs.

The FA Cup competition, which was supposed to be played in November 2001, has already been postponed on several occasion due to refusal of the clubs to play.

The sour relationship between the FA and the clubs started last year when the clubs demanded the FA convene a congress as required by the organisation's constitution.

But FA officials were not in favour of holding the congress fearing that their leader, Justice Tolla Thompson would be impeached for turning the association into a limited company.

After much protest a congress was eventually held in May but Justice Thompson kept his position.

Since then one Premier club, Wellington People FC, have vowed not take part in any competition organised by the FA under its current status.

Wellington People FC chairman, Paul Kamara who is also proprietor and editor of one of the leading newspapers in Sierra Leone, For Di People, has been taken to court by Justice Tolla Thompson.

Kamara is answering charges on libel for publishing stories on Justice Thompson and the SLFA.
