Cameroon clubs' call for cash

Club presidents in Cameroon, who say they are in dire need for money to survive the season, are calling for subsidies from the Cameroon football federation, Fecafoot.

The club chiefs made a fervent appeal to Fecafoot to rapidly make good the engagement that ten per cent of World Cup proceeds be paid to the 16 division one teams.

"We are asking Fecafoot the money because of the financial difficulties of clubs. It's not a war," Antoine Essomba Eyenga, chairman of the club association, says.

"We badly need the money now, not at the end of the season."

"We have not received a reply from the federation, but I think it will be a positive one soon."

However, no federation official would say how soon. The officials said the clubs will be paid as soon as the federation cleared accounts with Fifa.

"The clubs have been promised the money. They will get it," said Fecafoot's assistant secretary general, Ndoki Mukete.

The petition came out from an urgent meeting of the club association. The club chiefs also requested that five per cent of the World Cup proceeds due clubs of the inferior leagues be paid.

Cameroon clubs can not count on gate takings any longer and very little money is coming from so-called members or fans. And few have corporate sponsors.

Though the clubs may not be hostile in their claim, observers think they are quick to demand the money because it could rapidly be spent by the federation.

The clubs had no dime from the 1994 World Cup money. If Fifa did not intervene it would have been same with money from France'98.

The federation has already paid subsidies of 3.500 to each club this season.
