Delfouneso celebrates his opener against Iceland at Deepdale
England Under-21s' penultimate warm-up game before the European Championships ended in a 2-1 defeat by Iceland.
Stuart Pearce started with only three of the players that started in last week's 4-0 drubbing of Denmark, as he handed some fringe players rare starts.
Aston Villa striker Nathan Delfouneso fired England ahead after 13 minutes as the hosts dominated the early stages.
But Arnor Smarason equalised before half-time and West Ham's Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson headed a 67th-minute winner.
England, who gave full debuts to Villa defender Nathan Baker and Ipswich forward Connor Wickham, enjoyed a bright start and looked likely to add to their early lead with Marc Albrighton causing havoc down the right.
Josh McEachran came close with a 38th-minute volley from Albrighton's cross, but Iceland equalised against the run of play.
Wickham, who had offered only fleeting glimpses of his talent, then lashed a volley at Iceland keeper Haraldur Bjornasson from a tight angle as England sought to restore their lead.
But instead the hosts fell behind when slack marking at a corner allowed Eyjolfsson the space to head in the winner at Deepdale.
England kick off their Euro 2011 campaign against Spain on 12 June, with their final warm-up game seven days earlier against Norway.
