Football Association chairman David Bernstein has backed Fabio Capello's decision to restore John Terry to the England captaincy.

Terry was dropped from the role amid allegations over his private life but the England manager has reinstated him in place of Rio Ferdinand.

"Fabio came to see me about this a couple of weeks back," Bernstein said.

"I told him that if he was absolutely sure that John was the right man for the job then I would back him 100%."

Bernstein's endorsement comes at a good time for Capello after his handling of the captaincy has come under heavy criticism.

Ferdinand was upset about the decision and the Manchester United defender seemed to avoid meetings with Capello last week as the manager visited Old Trafford for matches against Marseille and Bolton.

But Bernstein told BBC Sport: "Since I became chairman I have made it clear that the England team is a matter for the England manager and the decision on who should be captain is absolutely a decision for him."

The 67-year-old also denied reports that the FA had already decided to back Mohamed Bin Hammam in his campaign for the Fifa presidency against Sepp Blatter.

"That is absolutely not what the FA is going to do. We are going to take our time and weigh up everything in a serious, professional way and then take our decision on what is best for the FA," he said.

"We now have two very credible candidates. They have both said they will come and see me at Wembley in the next couple of weeks.

"We will consider what they both have to say and the FA board will take a decision, probably in April. We have to work with Fifa and we will weigh up which candidate gives us the best opportunity of doing that."

The new president will be elected at a Fifa Congress, which starts on 31 May.
