2222: And thus the door to the Premier League title race was blow wide open. I'm off to read the Chelsea 2-1 Man Utd and Everton 0-1 Reading match reports and thank the Lord for the goalscoring unit that is Dele Adebola. Join me on Wednesday when Arsenal meet Leyton Orient and Manchester City entertain Aston Villa in the FA Cup. Night.

From The Guardian's Daniel Taylor on Twitter: "Fergie on MUTV: Evans and Rio Ferdinand both out of LFC match. Wes Brown will replace suspended Vidic."

From Luke in Swansea, on text: "Was about to mention before SAF beat me to it that this is the third time in three seasons that poor refereeing has cost us points at Stamford Bridge. Coincidence?"

From Alex in London, on text: "Quit your whining Fergie. How many times have United been saved by referee decisions... Mark Clattenberg. And how was Luiz still on the pitch he asks! Same way Rooney stayed on! Absolute cheek."

2214: And the opinions keep on flooding in...

Full time
Everton 0-1 Reading
Saj Chowdhury reports: "Everton were everything they weren't against Chelsea - they lacked passion and confidence. Reading will fly the flag for the Football League and who's to say they won't go all the way?"

Full time
Chelsea 2-1 Man Utd
BBC Sport's Phil McNulty at Stamford Bridge: "Big win for Chelsea to keep those flickering Premier League title hopes alive. How damaging will this night be for Manchester United, who now face another huge test at Liverpool on Sunday?"

2209: Time for a wrap from our match report writers...

2208: BBC Radio 5 live are reporting that Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini might be out for the rest of the season. That would compound their misery on a difficult night for the Toffees.

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti: "It was a good performance and we're still alive. Man United are fantastic, they played really well, but we managed to keep going bven at 1-0 down, played with power and intensity, and without playing really well you cannot beat this team. In the middle of the first half they were playing very well and in that moment we were in difficulty, but we played better in the second half. David Luiz could be lucky, but a lot of things were going on so it's difficult for the referee."

Everton boss David Moyes on going out of the FA Cup: "It's a massive disappointment for us because we did so well in the previous round. You can only ask for a home tie and we didn't take advantage of it."

Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson on Chelsea's David Luiz: "He's done Chicarito before he got booked, and he did Rooney two minutes before the penalty was awarded, I don't know how he was still on the pitch. The players have endured a lot of decisions against them and they didn't deserve that tonight. Chelsea aren't out of the title race if they keep getting decisions like that."

Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson: "We defended badly for the first goal, but the penalty kick is so soft, dear me. We played really well and we didn't deserve that. Three years in a row here decisions have changed the game."

From Tom, London, on text: "Chelsea should have 100% been down to 10 men before that goal. This hasn't been mentioned enough."

From LordMushroom on Twitter: "A wonderful advert for everything that is good about the Premier League. And everything that is bad about refereeing."

Reading manager Brian McDermott on BBC Radio 5 live on beating Everton 1-0 in the FA Cup: "I had a feeling we would come here and perform. In the first 20 minutes they played really well but we stuck to our gameplan, passed the ball and worked really hard and were good value for the result. The two up front worked their socks off and once we got to 1-0 we knew we had a real opportunity."

Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand on Twitter: "Didn't deserve to lose that for me... we'll brush it off and move on next game."

2151: Wow. Apparently, Everton striker Jermaine Beckford turned up late for their FA Cup tie at home to Reading this evening after an accident on the motorway held him up, and that's why he didn't start the game. They lost 1-0 to the Championship side, in case you didn't know.

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard: "We're still a lot of points behind, but all we could do was win the game. United are deservedly top of the league, but we've still got some fight in us and we showed that tonight. It was a big penalty for us, I just put my foot through it. Going 1-0 down was a big challenge, but I thought the front three were great, Fernando Torres's movement was top class, and if the rest of us can do our stuff we've always got a chance."

From HenryWhitfield on Twitter: "All these complaints about [referee] Atkinson are fine. But United stopped playing after going up 1-0. Their game to lose and they did."

2145: Well, James from Basingstoke, I thought that was a cracking finish anyway, to be honest. But then I'm always a bit biased when one of my predos comes good. Stay right here for reaction from Stamford Bridge as soon as it comes in.

From James, Basingstoke, on text: "Absolutely appalling officiating. I'm a neutral and that decision has killed the game. Shame. Both teams were going for the win and could have been a grandstand finish."

2140: Got your breath back yet? Me neither. After all the rubbish we've had to read in the last couple of days, that was a wonderful advert for everything that is good about the Premier League. Two fabulous teams, a game that was utterly compelling from first minute until last.

2138: Full-time Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United

2137: We're into the fifth minute of added time. United haven't had the ball for more than a few seconds in the last five, six minutes.

2136: Fernando Torres wastes a chance to shoot and then fails to pick out Ramires inside the United box. Seconds left at Stamford Bridge...

Red card
2135: SENDING OFF Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United)
There it is, the Serb skipper is off the pitch for a foul on Ramires after being beaten for pace by the Brazilian, who did wonderfully well to surge into the United box. Second yellow, and he'll be out of Sunday's game at Liverpool.

2134: Ryan Giggs is booked for a foul on Didier Drogba and Chelsea are just trying to eat up time down their right flank. It's frustrating for United, but Drogba is doing a brilliant job. Quite hard to get the ball off him, in fairness.

2133: Nemanja Vidic fouls Didier Drogba not once but twice, sending the Ivorian sprawling to the floor. Not sure why he isn't booked - and if he was, he'd be off, the United captain.

2132: The board goes up and we are going to have four minutes of added time at Stamford Bridge.

2131: Apparently, referee Martin Atkinson has given 11 penalties this season now. Seems like a lot, huh? Ramires continues to make a nuisance of himself to United, he's been excellent too tonight, and United look like they are running out of steam.

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty at Stamford Bridge: "Top quality game and a fine response from Chelsea to United's domination in the latter stages of the first half. Sir Alex Ferguson threw his arms out in horror as that penalty was awarded, clearly feeling the decision was a soft one."

2129: Fabio scampers forward on the left and for a moment is looks like he might have a shooting chance inside the Chelsea box, but Petr Cech does well to race off his line and smother the Brazilian. From 22 yards moments later, Darren Fletcher screws a half-volley into the crowd.

2128: Manchester United have five minutes of normal time plus some stoppage time to get something from this game.

From Matt in Wigan, on text: "That penalty shouldn't be the goal to decide a game like this - poor decision."

2125: That could've been 3-1 and game over at Chelsea. A corner is headed to the edge of the United box and Yuri Zhirkov smashes it goalwards - somehow the extraordinary Nemanja Vidic manages to squeeze the ball on to a post and away to safety, for now. Chelsea are trying to kill this one off.

2124: Full-time Everton 0-1 Reading

2123: Fabio comes on for Patrice Evra for Man United and Paulo Ferreira comes on for David Luiz for the hosts. About 10 minutes left at Stamford Bridge.

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
Chelsea goal: Hmm. Now, neutrals will be pretty pleased about that, but I'm not sure it was a penalty. Frank Lampard is on the left of the area and he tries to feed Yuri Zhirkov - the Russian manages to sneak the ball through Chris Smalling's legs and goes down under a challenge from the defender - but I'm not sure Smalling could really have got out of the way. Lampard doesn't care and he blasts the penalty brilliantly into the roof of the net, giving Edwin van der Sar no chance.

2121: GOAL Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United (Lampard, penalty)

2120: PENALTY TO CHELSEA

Football League Nathan: "What a night it is for the Mills family. Joseph Mills follows up Matt Mills' goal for Reading earlier with one of his own to practically seal Doncaster the three points. Big goal in League One as Walsall take the lead against Southampton."

2118: Fergie is going crazy on the touchline - he thinks Wayne Rooney has been checked by David Luiz just outside the Chelsea penalty area, and looking at the replays, he might have a case, too. Good Lord there's a lot going on.

2117: Michael Essien is booked for not much, and we've got about 15 minutes left of Chelsea 1-1 Man United. Meanwhile at Goodison in the FA Cup, Everton are on the brink of a disastrous home defeat at the hands of Reading.

Hector from London, on text: "Wonder what the odds were for David Luiz to score before Torres..?"

2116: Chelsea have a free-kick 30 yards out, which Didier Drogba smashes a couple of yards wide and a couple more high.

2114: Didier Drogba's shot from 22 yards is deflected behind by Chris Smalling, who has been very impressive this evening. Drogba lifts his arms into the air and tries to get the crowd going, which works. Chelsea are in the ascendancy at the moment.

2112: Double change for Manchester United, Dimitar Berbatov on for Javier Hernandez and Ryan Giggs - who equals Sir Bobby Charlton's 606 league appearances for the club - is on for Paul Scholes. Congratulations to the Welshman. Chelsea send Yuri Zhirkov on for Florent Malouda.

Football League Nathan: "Cracking game developing at Northampton where the home side are now only one goal behind against Burton Albion who at one stage led 3-0 and in the Championship it's all change at the Valley where Carlisle have come from behind to lead 2-1. Craig Curran with the second. Oh, and Portsmouth have found an opener against struggling Scunthorpe, Dave Kitson smashing in for the hosts."

2110: Incidentally, Didier Drogba is on the pitch at Stamford Bridge, he came on for Nicolas Anelka a few moments ago.

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty at Stamford Bridge: "Chelsea have suddenly come alive but Manchester United in no mood to sit back - everything set up for a frantic finale as both sides push for the victory."

2108: Everton are nearly level again, a cross from the left from Leighton Baines is headed back across goal by Jermaine Beckford and Leon Osman's shot forces a brilliant save from Reading keeper Alex McCarthy.

2107: Wayne Rooney is played in down the left and John Terry decides not to go out and meet him - big mistake, because Rooney runs into the area and fires across the face of goal, the ball nearly flying in off Terry, who was in no-man's land.

2106: From an Everton corner, Louis Saha's shot is blocked on the goalline by his team-mate, Jermaine Beckford. At Chelsea, Wayne Rooney has the ball in the net, but it's disallowed for offside.

2104: Reading go close to a second at Everton in the FA Cup - Jay Tabb's shot takes a deflection off Phil Neville and loops over the bar for a corner, which comes to nothing. Remember, it's still 1-0 to the Championship side in the fifth round, time running out for the home team too.

Yellow card
2104: Oof. David Luiz, with one of the great centre-half through-the-back-of-the-striker challenges of the season, completely takes out Wayne Rooney and is shown a yellow card. He probably shouldn't be on the pitch, but sometime people get lucky, you know.

Cesc Fabregas on Twitter: "David Luiz is looking to be a very good player and still only 23. He's got class. Defenders playing well with the ball always my favourites."

2102: Plenty of time left... Anyway, Didier Drogba is taking his tracksuit off. More than half an hour to go.

Football League Nathan: "Middlesbrough's Julio Arca completely mis-kicks his shot but it falls to Scott McDonald who makes no mistake with his effort and the hosts are ahead against promotion hopefuls Nottingham Forest. Starting to liven up there."

2059: Ouch. Javier Hernandez lays the ball off to Nani and gets an absolute clattering from David Luiz, who somehow escapes a booking. Fergie is livid. This is a proper game of football, could go either way.

2058: In trying to close David Luiz down it looks like Patrice Evra has picked up an injury, though he is going to try to play on for now.

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
Chelsea goal: They like defenders who can hit a football down at Chelsea, don't they? Game on, title race back on. Michael Essien crosses from the left after United half-clear a corner and after Branislav Ivanovic gets a flick on, David Luiz rifles in a right-foot volley before Edwin van der Sar can even move. Great finish.

2056: GOAL Chelsea 1-1 Manchester United (Luiz)

2055: Didier Drogba warms up on the touchline.

2054: Patrice Evra does wonderfully down the United left, showing terrific strength to hold off two challenges and tee up Wayne Rooney, but the striker's 25-yard shot doesn't bend enough and ends up a few yards wide of Petr Cech's left-hand post.

Football League Nathan: "Billy Sharp, unmarked in the box, header, 2-0 Doncaster. Derby in all sorts of trouble there after Sharp's 15th goal of the season. No such excitement at the Riverside where it's a pretty dour stalemate between Boro and Forest."

2052: More in the way of possession for Everton, who look like they are missing Tim Cahill tonight, but no end product. At Chelsea, Frank Lampard's ambitious 30-yard free-kick skims all the way along the floor into the arms of Edwin van der Sar.

2050: Better from Chelsea as Fernando Torres lofts the ball out to the left for Ashley Cole to volley a cross into the United six-yard box, but it's a bit too close to Edwin van der Sar and the Dutchman gathers.

2049: United continue where they left off, almost picking Chelsea off. Wayne Rooney plays a lovely pass out to the right to Darren Fletcher, he flicks it back to Michael Carrick and the midfielder's scooped pass into the Blues box just evades Rooney, who had sneaked round the back. Frank Lampard then goes and gives the ball away.

2048: Back under way at Chelsea. In 45 minutes if it stays this way, some people might be crowning new champions...

From HenryWhitfield on Twitter: "Put me in charge. Go with 4-2-4 in second half. Kalou, Torres, Anelka, Drogba. What do we have to lose? Nothing."

2045: Chelsea legend Gianluca Vialli gets a very nice round of applause from the west London regulars as he walks out at Stamford Bridge during the interval, stopping for a hug from Didier Drogba on his way off. What a centre-forward he was in his day, better when he had hair than without, too.

2043: Don't be shy, come and chat - the dancefloor's all yours. Tweet with the hashtag #BBCFootball, hit me @Stevo_football or thumb a text to 81111. You don't have, to, mind. I'm easy. You could always just check out Jack Wilshere and Rio Ferdinand *bantering* on Twitter instead.

2040: Now there's a boy who knows how to take free-kicks... Ian Harte swings in a blinding effort from 30 yards at Everton and it only just whistles past Tim Howard's right-hand upright. Nearly 2-0 Reading - the Toffees are in trouble in the FA Cup.

From Jack, Bristol, on text: "Actually, Cole scored from a free-kick for Arsenal v Man City in 2000. So I guess he's due..."
Thanks for giving me one I could print, Jack

BBC Radio 5 live summariser David Pleat: "Carlo Ancelotti has a few problems he needs to solve at half-time because United have started well and just got better. Chelsea haven't got the last 30 yards of danger that United have, they need a clever flank player to get balls across the box that Torres and Anelka can profit from."

2035: Jermaine Backford almost scores with his first involvement, taking a Louis Saha pass and rifling in a low shot that Alex McCarthy saves well low down to his left.

2034: Victor Anichebe and Jermaine Beckford come on for Seamus Coleman and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov and the second half gets under way at Goodison Park as Reading lead Everton 1-0 in the FA Cup.

Half time
2032: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester United
Phil McNulty's HT snap-shot:
"Manchester United will be delighted with a thoroughly deserved lead at half-time. Chelsea have 45 minutes to stop their Premier League title hopes going from highly unlikely to non-existent."

2031: ... Um, why on earth is Ashley Cole taking free-kicks? The left-back curls it wastefully over the bar. I'm left scratching my head.

2030: Cynical that, from Nemanja Vidic. He sticks out a leg and brings down a marauding Michael Essien as the Ghanaian flew forward from just inside the United half. Free-kick to Chelsea, 22 yards out...

2029: Think I did Edwin van der Sar a bit of a disservice there - from Branislav Ivanovic's effort the Dutchman, on the floor, actually stuck a hand up and prevented it going in, as did Nemanja Vidic a moment later. Brilliant from both of them.

Football League Nathan: "That did it, tempted a goal out of the Derby-Doncaster match. Billy Sharp responding to my call for Championship goals."

Football League Nathan: "Looking ominous for Wycombe as they fall 2-0 down to leaders Chesterfield, Danny Whitaker putting the hosts well in command. Still no goals in the Championship, only a matter of time, surely?"

2026: They might not get closer to a leveller. Frank Lampard hammers in the free-kick, Edwin van der Sar saves it but parries it out to Branislav Ivanovic, who takes a touch and sends it goalwards, Nemanja Vidic somehow getting back on to his line to chest the ball away and John O'Shea then completes the clearance. Magnificent from Vidic.

2025: Patrice Evra fouls Fernando Torres and Chelsea have a free-kick about 25 yards out, over to the right of the penalty area. After a niggle between Ashley Cole and Wayne Rooney, would you believe, we're ready to take it...

2024: Chelsea just aren't making any headway at all, their attacks looks laboured in comparison with the pace of Manchester United. The visitors, on a ground where they haven't won in the league in their last eight visits, are dominant.

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty at Stamford Bridge: "And there is the impact from Wayne Rooney. From looking a frustrated figure he suddenly drills a fine low finish past Petr Cech. No more than United deserved after a fine spell in which Chelsea were overrun. Stamford Bridge a subdued place right now."

Football League Nathan: "Neatly worked set-piece ends with Deane Smalley putting League Two leaders 1-0 up on second-place Wycombe and over at Brentford, Notts County's Jon Harley has picked up two yellow cards in five minutes and is back in the dressing room, watching the Chelsea game perhaps?"

Half time
2019: Everton 0-1 Reading
Saj Chowdhury's HT snap-shot:
"It looks like a mini-Cupset could be on the cards. Everton looked good for the first 25 minutes but the goal left them looking bewildered for the rest of it. Will Toffees boss David Moyes make changes at half-time?"

2019: There's a few afters between Nani and Branislav Ivanovic after the Serb flattens the Portuguese by the byline. Referee Martin Atkinson sorts it out.

Football League Nathan: "Brighton up and running against Yeovil through Elliott Bennett's rifled effort from the edge of the box. Down at the other end, Colchester go 1-0 up against Bristol Rovers after dominating the opening 25 minutes - Kayode Odejayi with a simple tap in."

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
United goal: How big a moment in the title race is that? It's suicidal defending from Chelsea - Nani gives the ball to Wayne Rooney 25 yards out and while he's busy trying to face the goal Branislav Ivanovic goes walkabout, leaving Rooney along to slam in a fierce low shot that fizzes into the bottom right-hand corner of Petr Cech's net.

2015: GOAL Chelsea 0-1 Manchester United (Rooney)

2014: United are all over Chelsea. They are a threat from both wings and the Blues cannot cut off their supply line - they are only just hanging on here.

2013: The oft-mentioned David Luiz takes a shot from Patrice Evra in the uncomfortables and needs a couple of moments to gather himself before playing on. The £21m man will be fine.

2012: Ashley Cole gets caught out of position and Wayne Rooney sets Darren Fletcher away down the right - the Scot fires in a low cross, but there is David Luiz once again to clear the danger. He's keeping United at bay on his own at the moment.

From SamadGigii on Twitter: "Great to see such a lively start but 4-4-2 defo exposing our and Chelsea's defence somewhat. Although our defence is better ;)"

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty at Stamford Bridge: "Lively start from both sides - and Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti will be particularly pleased by the energetic opening made by Fernando Torres working in tandem with Nicolas Anelka. Wayne Rooney's main contribution so far has been a header that flew embarrassingly wide. Plenty of time for impact though."

2008: David Luiz goes in hard but fair on Wayne Rooney, who gets up quickly and sends Ramires to the floor. There's plenty of life in this one - first goal, as always, will be crucial.

2007: More terrific stuff from United, who carve Chelsea open thanks to some brilliant passing from Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney - the move ends with Rooney getting his header all wrong from Nani's left-wing cross, but that was lovely to watch. Fergie's even off the bench, motioning to head it in.

Football League Nathan: "Not many goals outside the Prem and FA Cup, Charlton lead Carlisle, Tranmere ahead against Exeter and Huddersfield 1-0 up on Hartlepool. Slow start in the Championship, nothing to show after 20 minutes."

2003: Everton defender Sylvain Distin fails to control the ball 40 yards from goal, allowing Reading's Jimmy Kebe to steal and run in on goal. However, the midfielder's low shot is saved by the alert Tim Howard.

BBC Radio 5 live summariser David Pleat: "If there was only a one-point difference between the two teams, I don't think Sir Alex Ferguson would play this system with Fletcher wide on the right. He is gambling - and it is making for a very entertaining match."

2001: Fabulous stuff from the leaders down their left, both Patrice Evra and Javier Hernandez doing exceptionally to get the Frenchman into the area, and his cross is agonisingly just ahead of Wayne Rooney at the far post. Play races up the other end and Nicolas Anelka drags a shot from the right wide of the far post. It's still very, very quick.

Yellow card
1959: Chelsea midfielder Ramires is in the book for a late challenge on Michael Carrick, which seems to quite upset a few of the United players and Sir Alex Ferguson too, who is up off the bench like lightning.

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
Reading goal: They'll be even happier now. Ian Harte whips over a corner and after Matthew Mills' header is blocked by Leon Osman, the ball falls back to the defender, who takes a touch and slams a volley through a crowd of players and past Tim Howard.

1957: GOAL Everton 0-1 Reading (Mills)

1955: Everton are still having a lot of the ball against Reading in the FA Cup, but it remains 0-0. Zurab Khizanishvili is booked for the visitors, but they'll be pretty happy with how it's gone so far.

1953: Ashley Cole gets his first real touch after John O'Shea heads a dangerous Fernando Torres cross away, and the Chelsea fans all shout "shoooooooot" at their left-back. He doesn't.

BBC Radio 5 live summariser David Pleat: "United look outnumbered in midfield with only Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick in the centre. Darren Fletcher is very much wide right up against Ashley Cole."

1950: Really nice move from the hosts as Ramires takes the ball from deep inside his own half and sets Nicolas Anelka away down the right, he crosses to Florent Malouda and from 15 yards out the Frenchman's side-foot shot is saved by Edwin van der Sar. Cracking pace to the game early on.

1949: Fernando Torres tries to run Nemanja Vidic down the right, but the Serb is too quick and strong for the Spaniard on this occasion. Typical Torres - only he could look more up for it than usual when faced with the man-mountain that is Vidic.

1948: Good start from Chelsea, with Fernando Torres getting away down the left and crossing, Nemanja Vidic clearing from inside his own six-yard box. From the corner, David Luiz is penalised for holding, so Branislav Ivanovic's volley in-off the bar won't count.

1947: Leon Osman crosses to the far post where Everton team-mate Seamus Coleman manages to head the ball towards goal but his effort bounces into the ground and over the Reading bar.

1946: Little muted at Stamford Bridge, so let's hope the game gives the people lucky enough to be there something to really shout about. We're under way as Chelsea take on Manchester United, winners of the last six Premier League titles between them.

1942: John Terry and Nemanja Vidic look mean and moody in the tunnel at Stamford Bridge and they are now leading their team-mates out. Big night, however you look at it.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti: "It's very difficult for us to close this gap, it will be very difficult to come back and Manchester United can decide their destiny. But we want to finish in the top four, this is our aim."

1940: Everton are bossing possession at Goodison, but they haven't created a chance yet. Leighton Baines' free-kick to the back stick is well defended and Reading have started in solid fashion.

1938: As BBC Radio 5 live commentator Mike Ingham says, it's incredible that Dimitar Berbatov, the league's top scorer, has been left on the bench for two games in a row now. According to Infostrada Sports Berbatov, on 19 goals in the division this season, can become the fifth player to bag 20 in one Premier League season for Man Utd, following Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Dwight Yorke.

From markovanwatson on Twitter: "Both teams are usually happy with a draw in these games. Chelsea won't be tonight so it should be an exciting game."

1934: First half-chance at Everton goes to the visitors, but Shane Long's cheeky flick from a Jimmy Kebe cross is easily dealt with by Tim Howard.

1932: Under way in the first game of the evening, with Everton taking on Championship side Reading in the fifth round of the FA Cup at Goodison Park.

From Ed, on text: "Although it is the same line-up as the other day for United I imagine it will be 4-3-3 with Rooney out on the left as opposed to the 4-4-2 against Wigan, can't see Fletcher playing right-wing against Cole, we'll put Nani there to pin him back."

1930: Don't worry, I asked Infostrada Sports to send us some nuggets for tonight and they did not disappoint:
- Chelsea are the only club in Premier League history with a positive win/loss record against Man United (12-10)
- The visitors have not won in their last eight trips to Stamford Bridge
- United have won their last 33 league games in which Wayne Rooney has scored, since a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea in April 2008
- Dimitar Berbatov has scored twice in his last four against the Blues, but the Bulgarian has never scored a league goal at the Bridge

Football League Nathan: "Even after Chesterfield's home defeat by Morecambe on Saturday, the Spireites are streets ahead at the top of League Two. But tonight they host second-place Wycombe who can halve the gap to three points with an away win. The bottom two (Stockport and Burton Albion) are in action, also, and should one slip up, the other has the chance to move out of the drop zone."

Football League Nathan: "Brighton's gap at the top of the League One table is down to one point now following their defeat at the weekend but the have the chance to extend it to four against Yeovil. Fellow promotion chasers Huddersfield and Southampton will be looking to stay in touch with the Seagulls when they meet Hartlepool and Walsall, respectively. Bristol Rovers are one place and one point behind the Saddlers and can move above them and Swindon and also out of the relegation spots with a win at home to Colchester."

1926: And the others...

Football League Nathan: "Nottingham Forest's game in hand against the promotion pack comes with an away trip to Middlesbrough. Boro were torn apart by QPR on Saturday and Swansea put four past them the week before and if Forest can get a 2-0 win tonight they'll move up two places into third spot. Derby and Doncaster are 18th and 19th in the table and level on 39 points. A win for either side would surely make them safe. Scunthorpe though need a fair few wins yet to guarantee their Championship safety, the Iron are at mid-table Portsmouth tonight."

1924: On to more important things, however...

Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson: "Mark Clattenburg dealt with it [the Rooney incident] at the time and he's the only person who comes out of this incident with any credit at all. Wayne Rooney is a bit fortunate - it was a clash and it was a silly thing to do, but it's finished now. As for the game, we have to win tonight. We're four points clear but it's not a commanding lead."

1919: I must point you in the direction of a couple of things Chelsea-Man United-related. First up is a cracking photo gallery of past clashes between the two teams, featuring The King, Georgie Best and Gordon 'Jukebox' Durie, among others. Next is a brilliant piece on Ryan Giggs in The Guardian about the Welshman's 20 years as a United player. Sample Giggs quote? "You're talking about a player coming into a successful team at the age of 17 and staying there for 20 years. It's not impossible, but it's tough to think it will happen again." Tonight, Giggs, who made his United debut on 2 March, 1991, will make his 606th league appearance, equalling Sir Bobby Charlton's club record. One of the great role models of his or any generation.

From houstycool65 on Twitter: "RIP Peter Osgood, King of the Bridge, died five years ago today. Let's hope one of our current strikers can play like Ossie tonight."

Chelsea v Manchester United team news:
Phil McNulty reports: "Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti may be signposting the future here by again using Fernando Torres and Nicolas Anelka as his main attacking forces and leaving Didier Drogba on the bench. Wayne Rooney, who escaped further punishment for his elbow on Wigan's James McCarthy, will be hoping to make headlines of a different kind tonight as they seek the result that will keep them on course for a record 19th title. Sir Alex Ferguson's faith in Javier Hernandez is confirmed by his selection ahead of Dimitar Berbatov.

Chelsea v Manchester United line-ups:
Chelsea: Cech, Ivanovic, David Luiz, Terry, Cole, Essien, Lampard, Ramires, Anelka, Torres, Malouda.
Subs: Turnbull, Drogba, Mikel, Bosingwa, Zhirkov, Kalou, McEachran.
Man Utd: Van der Sar, O'Shea, Smalling, Vidic, Evra, Fletcher, Carrick, Scholes, Nani, Hernandez, Rooney.
Subs: Kuszczak, Brown, Berbatov, Giggs, Fabio Da Silva, Rafael Da Silva, Gibson.
Referee: Martin Atkinson (W Yorkshire)

From James, Salford, on text: "Stevo, I think you've lost it mate. Chelsea don't stand a chance! 1-0 United. Absolutely chuffed Hernandez gets a start in a big game. He will get the winner. C'mon you Reds!"

Everton v Reading team news:
Saj Chowdhury reports: "Everton midfielders Marouane Fellaini and Tim Cahill miss out because of injuries and Jack Rodwell and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov come into the starting XI. Louis Saha starts up front, two days after escaping unscathed following a car accident. Reading make two changes, bringing in Zurab Khizanishvili and Brynjar Gunnarsson for the injured Ivar Ingimarsson and Shaun Cummings.

Everton v Reading line-ups:
Everton: Howard, Neville, Jagielka, Distin, Baines, Coleman, Rodwell, Arteta, Bilyaletdinov, Osman, Saha.
Subs: Mucha, Hibbert, Heitinga, Beckford, Anichebe, Duffy, Baxter.
Reading: McCarthy, Gunnarsson, Mills, Khizanishvili, Harte, Kebe, Tabb, Leigertwood, McAnuff, Long, Hunt.
Subs: Andersen, Karacan, Antonio, Church, Robson-Kanu, Howard, Armstrong.
Referee: Andre Marriner (W Midlands)

From The Daily Telegraph's Henry Winter on Twitter: "Man United unchanged, first time in 165 games: Van der Sar; O'Shea, Smalling, Vidic, Evra; Fletcher, Carrick, Scholes, Nani; Rooney, Hernandez."

1900: Stevo's Predos:
Chelsea 2-1 Man United
Everton 3-1 Reading

1858: Breaking team news: Fernando Torres starts for Chelsea, so Didier Drogba is on the bench. Man United are unchanged.

From Tricky_C_COYS on Twitter: "If Chelsea lose tonight, they will be as close to the bottom of the table as they will be to the top."

1853: No team news from Stamford Bridge yet, but hearing that Louis Saha, a couple of days after smashing his Ferrari up (hate it when that happens to me) starts for Everton against Reading in the FA Cup.

From Sam, Manchester, on text: "It's been a while since we've won at Stamford Bridge, but with Chelsea not doing well recently and with us kicking onto the final chapter of the season I'm quietly confident we'll get a result."

Chelsea v Manchester United scene-setter:
Phil McNulty reports: "After the row over Wayne Rooney's elbow at Wigan and Ashley Cole's airgun antics it is back to Premier League title business when Chelsea meet Manchester United at Stamford Bridge tonight. Chelsea, currently 15 points behind United, will know anything less than victory will effectively extinguish their hopes, while Sir Alex Ferguson will believe United can take giant strides towards a record 19th crown by emerging unscathed from their visits to Chelsea and Liverpool on Sunday."

Everton v Reading scene-setter:
Saj Chowdhury reports: "This FA fifth-round tie finally takes place after Everton and Chelsea found a window in their diaries for a replay which was decided by a thrilling penalty shoot-out. The Toffees and the Royals have only met seven times in the past on a competitive level, while Reading knocked out Stevenage in the last round. This week, manager Brian McDermott revealed in the Reading Post that Alan Pardew, whose Newcastle side were defeated by Borough in the third round, did not think they would beat Stevenage. With mates like those Brian..."

1846: Firstly, if you'd be so kind to indulge us, I'd like our match report writers to set the scene for tonight's events in far more erudite fashion that I could ever manage...

1845: Now, bear with me on this because there have been a few changes around here since I last presided over one of these. First things first - I'm Jonathan Stevenson, and if you want to hit me on Twitter, please feel free. If you do use Twitter, can I urge you to use the hashtag (funny word) #BBCFootball? Triffic. Finally, if you're old skool, whack us a text on 81111. Not that old skool, obviously.

1844: Ooh, Everton v Reading starts at 1930 GMT. Oops.

From dandelacour on Twitter: "Chelsea need a good result tonight. Draw or lose and their out of the title race for sure. Big night for Drogba + Torres."

1839: Plenty of lower league action too, so Football League Nathan will be along in a little while to tell us what the evening has in store. As long as he delivers us a Forest win at Middlesbrough, I think we'll all be happy (sorry Smoggies).

1834: So, can Ashley Cole help shoot down Manchester United's Premier League title hopes at Stamford Bridge this evening, or, come full-time, will there be more power to Wayne Rooney's elbow in the visitors' hunt to displace champions Chelsea?

1830: Welcome one and all to the weird and wonderful world of football. A world where Birmingham can overcome the odds to beat mighty Arsenal and win their first trophy for 48 years, where the great Ryan Giggs can ply his trade at the top level for a staggering 20 years, where an England international can allegedly take a gun to work and accidentally shoot someone and another can elbow a fellow player in the head and go unpunished. Welcome to the indescribably insane world of football, where heroes and villains reside and collide.
