Thierry Racon's stunning strike lit up a dire match to send Charlton through to the Southern Section semi-final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

The midfielder's powerful 25-yard drive found the top corner, giving Rhys Evans no chance in the Shrimpers' goal.

But Charlton stopper Rob Elliot was the busier goalkeeper, including an excellent dive to deny Blair Sturrock.

The visitors ended the game strongly with Evans keeping out Johnnie Jackson's free-kick.

Southend defender Luke Prosser told BBC Essex:

"You can never fault our work rate or effort. It's only from a 25-yard strike that we got beat, so we are pleased with the way we played.

"We can't keep looking at Barry Corr and Blair Sturrock to score goals, we need to chip in elsewhere around the pitch."
