Beckham celebrates his equaliser against FC Dallas

David Beckham scored as Los Angeles Galaxy beat FC Dallas 2-1 to win the Supporters' Shield for Major Soccer League's top point-scoring team.

The Galaxy are now Western Conference play-off top seeds after taking their first trophy since Beckham arrived.

Ex-England captain Beckham, 35, fired in to cancel out Atiba Harris' opener before Juninho scored the winner.

And the Galaxy now travel to Seattle Sounders on Sunday for the first match of a two-leg Western semi-final.

The four best-placed teams in the Western and Eastern Conferences play regional play-offs, with the winners competing for the MLS Cup in November.

Beckham left Real Madrid for Los Angeles on a five-year deal in July 2007.

It is the first time since 2002 that the Galaxy have won the Supporters' Shield.

LA Galaxy won 18 and drew five of their regular season matches, to finish three points ahead of Western runners-up Real Salt Lake.

Beckham returned for Galaxy in August after recovering from the torn Achilles tendon he suffered while on loan at AC Milan in March - an injury that ended his hopes of a place in England's 2010 World Cup squad in South Africa.

His side needed only a draw to seal top spot in their final regular season game but fell behind in the 22nd minute.

US striker Landon Donovan set Beckham up for the equaliser 11 minutes later, with the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder firing home a low drive from 20 yards out before Brazilian Juninho sealed victory after the break.

Manager Bruce Arena said Beckham's performance against Dallas was his best of the season.

"I felt the last game was my best performance but if Bruce says that, then I will take that," Beckham told the LA Galaxy website.

"I'm just trying to get my match fitness back and in the last couple of games I felt really good, so I am happy that the manager thinks that about me."

After their second leg on 7 November, LA Galaxy or fourth-placed Seattle will face the winners of Real Salt Lake against Dallas in the Western Conference finals.

The western winners meet the Eastern champions in the MLS Cup final in Toronto on 21 November.

LA Galaxy lost to Real Salt Lake on penalties in the 2009 final.

Beckham has 115 international caps, more than any other England outfield player.

After the World Cup, England coach Fabio Capello said that Beckham was "too old" to be considered for the squad in the future but the Italian has since insisted he had not been ruled out of contention.
