Port Vale 2 - 1 Rochdale

Port Vale booked a place in the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at the expense of Rochdale.

Marc Richards gave the home side the lead in the first half, when he smashed in Anthony Griffith's pass.

The visitors started brightly after the break but it was Vale who broke out to score when Tommy Fraser provided for Justin Richards to strike.

Matt Done's 18-yard shot pulled one back for Rochdale but it was a mere consolation for Keith Hill's side.
