May 2003: Despite a team including players such as David James, Michael Carrick, Paolo di Canio and Jermain Defoe, West Ham are relegated from the Premier League
June 2003: West Ham's plight does not halt Cole's rise and two years after his England debut, he scores his first international goal against Serbia and Montenegro
August 2003: While Carrick stays with West Ham in the Championship, Cole moves on and is recruited by Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri in a �6.6m transfer. He scored 10 times in 126 appearances for the Hammers
