Platini took over as Uefa president in 2007

Uefa president Michel Platini has been released from hospital after he fainted in a Johannesburg restaurant on Friday.

Platini who had been suffering from flu, had precautionary tests but nothing significant was found.

Initially there were fears Platini, 55, had suffered a heart attack but Uefa said this was not the case.

In a joint statement, Uefa and Fifa confirmed that Platini will attend the World Cup final, which takes place on Sunday at Soccer City.

"All the medical tests conducted were normal and Mr Platini is looking forward to attending the final," read the statement.

William Gaillard, a Uefa spokesman, said on Friday: "He is fine. He had been suffering from a cold and a bit of flu and he fainted before eating in a restaurant."

Platini, who became Uefa president in 2007, is a member of world football governing body Fifa's executive committee and the World Cup organising committee.

He was at the Pigalle restaurant in the Michelangelo Towers mall attached to Fifa's designated hotel, and was said to be dining with fellow Frenchman and former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier and former Scotland manager Andy Roxburgh.
