2216: Well, I hope that you had a good evening. Though I guess that would you depend on your perspective. Rafa Benitez certainly looked predictably downbeat after a depressing night for his side - but fair play to Wigan. Thanks for all your comments texts, tweets, 606s. Tuesday brings both Premier League and Champions League action - and no matter how down in the mouth you are at the moment remember the sun will rise in the morning and herald the start of another day.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez: "We did not play well, especially in the first half. We did not show attitude, we worked hard after the break but without game intelligence. We had too many things that were wrong. We are not happy, we have to show more character if we want to be in the top four."
From anonymous, via text: "As a Chelsea fan I think Rafa Benitez is doing a fine job and should stay on for as long as possible!"
Wigan's Paul Scharner: "It was a very important three points and special to do it against a top team. We have had a really bad run but I think our confidence will now increase."
2205: So Liverpool miss out on the chance to move to fourth place. They remain sixth, one point behind Man City and Tottenham, both of whom have at least one game in hand. However, the win lifts Wigan up to 14th and takes them four points clear of the drop zone.
From LEGIN99M on 606: "Can there really be any Liverpool supporters left who want Rafa Benitez to continue?"
BBC 5 live summariser Chris Waddle: "Liverpool for me have not played well for a long, long time, They have scraped results but going forward they do not create a great deal."
From TommyKillen on Twitter: "As a Manchester United fan watching this game with two Liverpool fans, this is comedy. This time last year they were going to win the Premier League!"
2159: A disappointed Rafa Benitez takes his glasses off and walks down the tunnel. Liverpool are up against it now in terms of the battle for fourth place. Massive shout to Wigan, who register their first win over the Reds and really give themselves a shot in the arm in terms of their quest to climb away from the lower reaches of the table.
2158: FULL-TIME Wigan 1-0 Liverpool
2158: We have had five minutes of injury time.
2156: Gary Caldwell misses a high ball and a substantial scramble ensues that Wigan survive.
2156: All Wigan. Victor Moses picks Glen Johnson's pocket and should square the ball but opts to shoot and misses the target.
2155: Wigan hit Liverpool on the break but Charles N'Zogbia delays at the crucial moment and the danger is snuffed out. Roughly two minutes left. Rafa Benitez is cutting a very irritated figure.
2153: I'm told (OK, Mark from London has texted in) that Liverpool have not won on a Monday night in something like their last 13 attempts.
2151: Wigan clear their lines again. Not so Sotirios Kyrgiakos, whose poor header forces him to scramble after the ball before finally launching it up-field. Five minutes of injury time.
2150: Definition of desperation? The bloke on 606 who seems to think Liverpool's predicament at Wigan is my fault. Two minutes of normal time left and no sign of an equaliser.
2148: Football vernacular - Hugo Rodallega has 'put a shift in'. He slowly makes his way off and Jason Scotland comes on.
2148: Hugo Rodallega shoots wide from distance. Just a reminder, Wigan have never beaten Liverpool.
2146: Enough already all you sensitive Wigan fans - for the sake of peace and quiet lets pretend the crowd of less than 18,000 is marvellous.
2145: The Colchester-Brighton match finishes goalless, which must please Leeds.
2145: There are 10 minutes of normal time left. Liverpool need to put their foot down if they are serious about fourth place. A challenge brimming with frustration by Steven Gerrard on James McCarthy sees the skipper in the book. Hendry Thomas replaces Mohamed Diame for the Latics. Dirky Kuyt then makes way for Ryan Babel.
2140: Another Liverpool move is snuffed out. Change the record someone. Wigan's Mohamed Diame is injured making yet another challenge. He has been superb. Seconds later Fernando Torres, yes him, is booked for a late tackle.
2137: More desperate defending from Liverpool. Hold on, cracking chance for Liverpool. Dirk Kuyt's superb header back across goal picks out an unmarked Fernando Torres, who volleys wide from eight yards. A poor, poor miss. As terrible as Liverpool have been, Torres has wasted some good opportunities.
2136: Hmm, I am almost made to look like a complete fool. Hugo Rodallega plays in Charles N'Zogbia, whose shot is smothered by Pepe Reina. Paul Scharner sees his follow-up effort also blocked.
2135: OK, crazy talk time. I'm starting to think Liverpool will equalise.
2133: There are 17,427 at the DW Stadium watching this. Poor, whatever the reason. The game is becoming stretched and Liverpool are starting to have more of the ball. Steven Gerrard puts in a cross that Chris Kirkland collects. We have seen precious little of the midfielder tonight.
2130: Yossi Benayoun floats in a corner.....that strikes the first defender and goes out for another. The second effort goes out for a goal kick. Alberto Aquilani comes on for Yossi Benayoun. Wigan lead 1-0 with 68 minutes gone.
2128: Liverpool win a corner. They have come back into the contest (slightly). Wonder if we will hear more about the pitch from Rafa Benitez? Marcelo Moreno makes way for Victor Moses.
2127: Top stuff from the Latics. Emmerson Boyce shoots narrowly wide from long distance. Shortly after a last-ditch challenge halts a meaningful run towards goals from Hugo Rodallega.
2124: Wish I had time to post them all, but looking around the 606s, tweets and texts there appear to be an incredible number of Liverpool fans who are on a complete downer, which I think is unusual because they normally back their team to the hilt.
2123: Wigan swing a corner in and Titus Bramble makes a decent contact from six yards. Alas for him, he cannot keep his effort on target. No sign of an equaliser from Liverpool.
2120: Calamity time. A Jamie Carragher header takes the ball away from the advancing Pepe Reina. Carragher chases after the ball and attempts to clear but Marcelo Moreno's block loops up in the air and, from a stupendously tight angle, moves towards goal, forcing a headed clearance off the line from Sotirios Kyrgiakos.
2118: The Wigan fans are making some noise - and who can blame them. The Latics are playing with plenty of passion and endeavour and in all honesty Liverpool have not been up to the job so far.
2116: Glen Johnson comes on for Lucas, who has done nothing. I thought Rafa Benitez never made a substitution before the hour mark? With 54 minutes gone, perhaps this is a sign of his desperation?
2115: Glen Johnson warming up. Time for Javier Mascherano to move into midfield?
2114: Wigan knocks some precise passes around and this is far too easy at the moment.
2111: Maxi Rodriguez picks out Fernando Torres in space but the striker shoots over from 16 yards. Fully fit and in form, that would surely have at least tested Chris Kirkland.
2110: Wigan again - and Pepe Reina acts quickly to cut out a low cross from Hugo Rodallega.
2109: Early chance for Wigan, but Hugo Rodallega sees his strike brilliantly blocked by Javier Mascherano, who has been excellent. All Wigan so far.
2107: Play resumes in Wigan. No changes to report.
2105: Still goalless in the match between Colchester and Brighton as the battle for the top six in League One hots up.
From The Macedonian Marvel on 606: "As far as the race for fourth goes, Villa must be considered a great chance. If you all look at the remaining fixtures you'll see why. Spurs will not get fourth this year. Man City, Villa and if we can win tonight, Liverpool will be in that mixer."
2100: Alberto Aquilani anyone?
From JoelKHughes on Twitter: "If Wigan can keep this up, Liverpool have got to be out of the running for fourth place. Villa have three games in hand on them and Man City two. "
2055: I guess it is a case of fair play to Wigan, who grew in confidence through the half and deserve their lead. I'm trying to think of encouraging points for Liverpool fans but (and admittedly this happens quite often) by mind is blank. Looking at 606, the text and twitter I would have to say that many of you agree.
From Dave, Liverpool fan, via text: "I have no idea how we are still in the hunt for fourth based on this and recent games."
2051: HALF-TIME Wigan 1-0 Liverpool
BBC 5 live summariser Chris Waddle: "I think Wigan deserve to lead. They have worked very hard and their three in midfield have dominated."
2047: Great tenacity from Marcelo Moreno, who chases down a seemingly lost cause and forces a hurried clearance from Pepe Reina. Three minutes of injury time.
From anonymous, via text: "Liverpool are a complete mess, not one player can pass the ball, a shadow of the team of last year... Time to go Rafa."
2045: Good chance for Liverpool. Maxi Rodriguez crosses from the right and Fernando Torres meets the ball six yards from goal but his attempted header effort misses the target.
2043: Wigan break, the impressive James McCarthy goes down under a challenge from Emiliano Insua, who has already been booked. He is skating on thin ice.
2041: Wigan deserved that opener and, having taken the lead, continue to press their opponents. Titus Bramble is booked for a terrible late challenge on Fernando Torres.
Wigan goal: Dirk Kuyt carelessly gives the ball away deep into Liverpool territory. Emmerson Boyce intercepts Kuyt's sloppy pass and within seconds his cross from the right has been tapped home from six yards by an unmarked Hugo Rodallega.
2037: GOALFLASH Wigan 1-0 Liverpool (Rodallega)
2035: Dirk Kuyt delivers a cross from the right and Maxi Rodriguez is poised to pull the trigger before he is thwarted by a superb defensive header. Sotirios Kyrgiakos is booked after rather crudely bringing down Paul Scharner. Wigan enjoy a spell of pressure.
2033: No goals in the Colchester v Brighton game - though numerous texts, 606s, tweets etc are suggesting it is very watchable indeed.
2032: A deep free-kick is delivered into the Liverpool area but it comes to nothing. Just watching a replay of the Steven Gerrard chance. It really was great approach work by Yossi Benayoun.
2030: I take it all back. Dirk Kuyt plays in Yossi Benayoun, who in turn brilliantly picks out Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool skipper is legally challenged as he tries to finish from six yards. He regains his feet and shoots but he misses the target.
2029: I'd just like to apologise for failing to reel out the woodwork graphic before. Thanks for all the reminders. Still no hint of actual excitement.
2027: Those empty seats are starting to look very shrewd indeed. I have to say though that Javier Mascherano looks great at right-back.
2026: It really has been taxi for Insua time so far - Charles N'Zogbia has the beating of him and now the Liverpool player has been booked he really has to be careful.
2022: Wigan win a free-kick that Hugo Rodallega strikes some distance over the crossbar. The Latics have been impressive so far.
2021: Another timely interception by Jamie Carragher. Make no mistake, Wigan are well on top here.
2020: Aside from the Fernando Torres chance, Liverpool have offered very little. Oops. Chris Kirkland's whacks the ball clear - straight into the face of Maynor Figueroa. Take that.
2016: Good spell of play for Wigan. Jamie Carragher makes a telling tackle to end James McCarthy's surging run into the box. Shortly after Charles N'Zogbia drills the ball dangerously across the face of goal.
2014: A colleague tells me that Torres's volley at 2010 hit the post. I still think he should have hit the target.
2012: Rafa was right. The pitch is poor. Sticky. Liverpool win another corner that Titus Bramble heads clear. Wigan look like they might strike on the break but the move breaks down when Emiliano Insua breaks up play.
2010: Yossi Benayoun cuts in from the left and shoots. His effort is deflected out for a corner. The ball comes in and falls to Maxi Rodriguez and his header falls to an unmarked Fernando Torres, who smashes his shot wide from a tight angle. A good chance and you would expect a player of his quality to at least hit the target.
BBC 5 live summariser Chris Waddle: "It is very congested in the middle of the park - you basically have six players in that area. Fernando Torres has been far too isolated so far."
2007: Javier Mascherano crosses from the right. His effort is only half cleared and the ball drops to Steven Gerrard 25 yards from goal. His strike, however, flies well over the Wigan crossbar.
2006: Another word on the pitch - apparently the re-laying was only completed on Friday. Wigan seem happy to surrender territory and defend in numbers. No significant action as yet.
2003: Referee Andre Marriner finally gets the game under way. Why the delay? Plenty of empty seats.
1958: Play just about to get under way at the DW Stadium. Wigan could desperately do with taking something from this contest. They are just a point above the bottom three. No goals in the Colchester-Brighton match.
1957: Looks a touch chilly in Lancashire. I must confess to being a touch confused by the weather of late. Look through the window and see glorious sunshine. This is enough to fool me into thinking it must be quite warm. Wrong.
1954: Just watched an interview with Rafa Benitez. Get the impression he isn't super thrilled with the relaid pitch at Wigan. To say the least.
From Stephen, Manchester, via text: "I'm going for a 3-0 to Wigan, Rafa Benitez getting sacked and Liverpool going into administration. Now that's anti-Liverpool bias!"
1949: My prediction? A fast and entertaining game, the likes of which we so rarely see on a Monday evening in early March at a stadium shared with a Super League team coached by someone who was assistant at last season's NRL champions.
1946: Just a word on Glen Johnson. He has not been in a Liverpool squad since 28 December - and his return to fitness is surely good news for England? The fact he is on the bench means Javier Mascherano continues at right-back. Daniel Agger is on the bench because he is carrying a slight knee injury.
From RickAllen on Twitter: "When Wigan go up 1-0 early on, will the Rafa hot-seat be burning, or scorching? "
1942: Do stop picking on me, I'm sure I have been neither pro nor anti-Liverpool thus far! As for Fabiano (and not Fabio) Aurelio, I'm fairly sure that is what his mum calls him when he has been a very naughty boy.
From Alaric, Oxford, via text: "I can't believe you typed the Liverpool team out in such a derogatory fashion, typical anti-Liverpool bias!
From SF Kopite on 606: "I'm not particularly worried about Liverpool failing to score. Whenever we've got all three of Benayoun, Gerrard, and Torres on the pitch, we don't lack for cutting edge. I'm going to say 3-1 Liverpool."
1933: For this to work I need your help in the form of some interactive communication. I'm hoping this will facilitate high quality chat and banter (possibly). Text me on 81111 (UK) or +44 7786200666 (world), large it on 606 or quite simply tweet me.
1930:TEAM NEWS Wigan v Liverpool Wigan make two changes, with Emmerson Boyce in for Mario Melchiot and Marcelo Moreno replacing Hendry Thomas. Glen Johnson is on the bench for Liverpool, who also makes two changes, with Sotirios Kyrgiakos replacing Daniel Agger and Emiliano Insua coming in for the injured Fabiano Aurelio.
1920: A quick word on the game from League One. Colchester are looking to boost their promotion prospects with victory against lowly Brighton. Colchester could move to within three points of Leeds in second place.
1917: So, Liverpool have never lost to seriously out-of-form Wigan, who are winless in seven games. The Latics are tumbling towards the drop zone and their only victory in their last 13 matches was against Wolves on 16 January. All of which makes predicting tonight's result ridiculously easy, right? Well, Liverpool haven't exactly been tip top on the road of late, having failed to score in their last three Premier League away games.
1915: Now then. This is my first live text of the football season SO TAKE IT EASY ON ME. There have been a few technical changes since I last did this job so a little clemency would go a long way. However, if you wish to accuse me of pro/anti-Liverpool bias I would be delighted to hear all about it.
