BBC commentator John Motson hopes to end goal drought

If John Motson gets a little carried away should either Wolves or Tottenham score when they meet at Molineux on Wednesday, then please forgive him.

The BBC football commentator has sat through four consecutive goalless draws and is yet to describe a goal for Match of the Day in 2010. Can anyone remember the last? (answer at bottom of page)

Motty, as he is more affectionately known, has never endured a more barren run in more than 40 years behind the microphone.

He has sat through Saturday's goalless game between Tottenham and Aston Villa at White Hart Lane and January's goalless clashes between West Ham and Blackburn, Villa and Arsenal and Spurs and Hull.

"It is the longest run I have ever had," he said. "I'm hoping for a goal between Wolves and Spurs at Molineux."

History suggests Motty may well end his 375-minute wait for a goal in the Black Country as there have only been two goalless draws in 88 meetings between the clubs.

Wolves won the reverse fixture this season 1-0, while Spurs won 2-0 at Molineux and 5-2 at White Hart Lane the last time the teams met in the top flight in 2003-04.

* Motty's last goal was scored by Fulham defender Chris Smalling. It was his calamitous own goal that helped Chelsea beat the Cottagers 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on 28 December 2009.
