Barry Ferguson will not rule out a return to Scotland duty under Craig Levein if the Dundee United manger is confirmed as national team coach.

The Birmingham midfielder was handed a ban during George Burley's tenure for gesturing at photographers during a World Cup qualifier against Iceland.

"If I do get asked, it's something I that I really need to consider and talk to people about," said Ferguson.

"Craig is a great appointment, he is a manager I have a lot of respect for."

Ferguson was stripped of the Scotland captaincy and banned from international duty before leaving Rangers in the summer following his part in the infamous 'Boozegate' incident with his Ibrox team-mate Allan McGregor.

The pair were captured making offensive gestures towards press photographers after being dropped to the bench for Scotland's qualifier with Iceland, although the Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith denied their ban from the national side was for life.

However, the SFA has confirmed that the new Scotland boss will be free to pick Ferguson and keeper McGregor in any future squad.

Levein is expected to be named Scotland manager on Wednesday afternoon but Ferguson is cautious about a return to playing for his country.

"It is something that I would need to consider but, up until I am asked, my Scotland career is over," said Ferguson.

"Never once did I quit Scotland; Scotland told me I was finished.

"I still have friends who play for Scotland so I always look out for them.

"I'm sure craig will be a great appointment.

"I met him a few times, he's a good guy and I think that's what Scotland is needing, someone like Craig Levein to come in and shake the full place up and I hope he does well.

"It's a big loss for Dundee United; he's done a great job up there."
