Ask Steve Claridge

Steve Claridge
Claridge is the BBC's Football League expert

Newcastle are currently top of the Championship.

This week I take a look at what is likely to happen at the club in January and speculate on their prospects of promotion.

I also give my thoughts on who I think will go up from League One and the decision to call off the match between Barnsley and Plymouth, as well as the prospects of survival at Tranmere and Grimsby.

If you have a question for Steve, you can submit it through Twitter at http://twitter.com/AskClaridge or use the form on the top right of the page.

Do you think Mike Ashley will sell any of Newcastle United's top players during the January transfer window? Where do you see Newcastle finishing in the Championship?
Marc Carden, UK

No I don't think Ashley will sell any of Newcastle's top players - it is as simple as that. What would be the point? In fact I think he is more likely to buy.

Ask yourself this - what would Newcastle be worth as a Premier League side as opposed to a Championship club? If he decides to sell in the summer he will get a lot more money if the Magpies are a top-flight club.

Don't forget, Newcastle have parachute payments as well this season and that softens the blow of relegation from a financial point of view.

I would not like to think about the consequences if he was to sell any players and that in turn derailed the club's promotion bid.

Besides, who has he got left to sell who would bring in a huge amount of money?

They don't have anyone that would fetch enough money to pay off a large chunk of their debts.

As for for where Newcastle will finish - it is looking very much as though they will finish in the top two. The way things are going the Magpies and West Brom could have pulled clear at the top by Christmas.

Newcastle look very solid at the moment. They are playing 4-5-1 away from home but are not conceding many and have players with the touch of class that is enabling them to win games. It is a tried and tested formula that is working for them.

Who do you think will go up from League One this year? I reckon Leeds are running away with it but there are a few teams pushing for second place, one of them being Charlton (who I support).
Graham, England

Leeds look like absolute certainties for automatic promotion.

They are a club that have got everything - all the bases are covered.

They have a great manager in Simon Grayson, a very good side and a proper goalscorer in Jermaine Beckford.

They have massive gates and having already played Liverpool in the Carling Cup, are likely to win their FA Cup replay against Kettering and take on Manchester United in the next round of the competition.

They have lots of revenue streams and are making a big profit at the moment.

The two times that I have seen Charlton this season they have performed horribly - including the FA Cup defeat at Northwich Victoria.

Leeds boss Simon Grayson
Grayson is doing an excellent job as Leeds manager

But there is no doubt they have good players and their 5-1 win over MK Dons was an outstanding result. They will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.

I also expect Huddersfield to be in the frame while Swindon are dark horses worth keeping an eye out for. MK Dons need to stop conceding so many goals but are still scoring plenty while Norwich are in with a great shout.

I rate Paul Lambert very highly as a manager and although the Canaries would not be my number one choice to finish second they would not be far away.

I think this is definitely the most exciting League One in a long time. I remember dropping into the division quite a few years ago with Birmingham. We had regular gates of 23-24,000 but were the only team with crowds of that size. That is not the case this season.

Why do you think Plymouth Argyle should forfeit the game against Barnsley when the pitch was unplayable?
Frazer Lloyd-Davies, England

This question refers to comments I made on the Football League Show on Saturday evening in relation to the match between Plymouth and Barnsley.

The Tykes led 4-1 when the game was abandoned because of a waterlogged pitch after 58 minutes.

However, I don't think Plymouth should forfeit the Barnsley game - but I certainly think it would be unfair for the opposition to go all the way back down south and then start the match from the beginning.

I think that instead of replaying the game in its entirety, it should be restarted at the point at which Saturday's encounter was abandoned and then played to a conclusion.

Also, I think it would be a good idea to have a cut-off point, after which a result stands if a game is abandoned.

If the scores are level when a match is called off I think the teams should be given the option to start all over again or continue from where they finished.

Part of the problem on Saturday was that the referee abandoned the match very suddenly.

He should perhaps have talked to both managers at half-time to let them know there was a possibility the match might not reach its conclusion.

Steve, we've been without a manager at Tranmere for many weeks now since the sacking of John Barnes and Jason McAteer. Full credit to caretaker manager Les Parry, who is doing a fantastic job but is he manager material?
Jamie, Merseyside

This does not happen all that often but I do get the feeling that what is happening off the field at Tranmere is affecting on-the-pitch matters.

If you have people at the top of any business who do not want to be there then it can undermine everything - and I am not sure the owners of Tranmere want to be at Prenton Park.

Strong football clubs have strong leaders - people take their direction and initiative from the people at the top.

I wish caretaker boss Les Parry the best very of luck at the club but results have not really improved under him and Rovers are still bottom.

Former Tranmere boss John Barnes
Tranmere urgently need to replace former boss Barnes

Parry was the physio before John Barnes left and I think his elevation has upset the whole equilibrium of the backroom staff at the club.

I definitely think they need to appoint a manager.

I am often in favour of a club taking a chance on a young boss but I am not sure that would be right for Rovers.

They need somebody who has been in this sort of situation before, somebody who knows the league and has his finger on the pulse.

They will not have a lot of money to spend so it will require a man who can quickly identify and bring in a few players on loan.

Steve, do you think Neil Woods can help Grimsby avoid the drop?
Dave Lingard, UK

Grimsby did not win while Neil Woods was in caretaker charge and I am not sure that bodes well for the Mariners chances of staying up.

Having said that, I am sure that Neil is full of enthusiasm and good ideas and I hope that he does well.

It is important he starts to put some wins on the board because they need to start picking up points.

This is a results business and as a rookie manager Woods will benefit greatly from a couple of good victories. After all, even the best doubt themselves when things aren't going well.

Grimsby is a good club and playing up there always sticks in the memory - if only because it is so cold!

They are one of the better supported clubs in League Two and you always get a bit of grief off the crowd - but in a good way and I enjoyed my trips to Blundell Park.
