Donal McDermott scored the decisive spot kick as Chesterfield won a dramatic Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie with a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory.

Earlier, Drew Talbot scored twice either side of an equaliser from Huddersfield's Anthony Pilkington.

Jordan Bowery put the home team 3-1 up after 89 minutes before a Pilkington free-kick and Nathan Clarke's close-range finish levelled for Town.

But Pilkington and Jim Goodwin both missed penalties as Town crashed out.

Chesterfield manager John Sheridan tells BBC Radio Sheffield:

"Anyone who's come to watch the game will have really enjoyed it.

"To find yourself 3-1 up with five minutes to do, you think you've won the game but full credit to them.

"We could have defended better but we showed character and we scored all our penalties.

"Obviously to go through the tie against a very good side was a great achievement from the players, full credit to them."
