Mark McCammon was Gillingham's hero in a 4-3 penalty shootout win over Colchester in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy first round.
Simeon Jackson put the home side ahead with a penalty in normal time but Clive Platt nodded in a close-range leveller.
Gillingham's Adam Miller hit the bar with a penalty but home keeper Alan Julian saved from David Fox before David Perkins hit his spot-kick wide.
McCammon then rolled in the vital penalty to win it for the Gills.
Gillingham manager Mark Stimson tells BBC Radio Kent:
"I wasn't nervous, I was confident in the boys - a few of them do practice penalties to be honest.
"Also Alan Julian I've known a long while and he's good with penalties."
