Three first-half goals ensured that Torquay progressed to round two of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at the expense of League Two rivals Cheltenham.
Danny Stevens opened the scoring, his shot going in via a deflection from Cheltenham's Michael Townsend.
Elliot Benyon headed the second from a corner before Stevens fired in his second with an angled, 16-yard drive.
Torquay's Nicky Wroe had a penalty saved by Scott Brown before Josh Low pulled a goal back for the home side.
Cheltenham boss Martin Allen told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
"I have to be brutally honest - the first half was diabolical.
"Players that have trained very hard - players that I've given an opportunity to come here and try to make a career for themselves as a professional footballer - had an opportunity to play, they let themselves down, let me down and let their club down.
"It was a shocking first-half performance - diabolical.
"Some of those players were found wanting in big style - that's no good for me and it's no good for this club and I might have to deal with some of it."
