A debut Sam Williams goal was enough to put Colchester into the southern area semi-finals of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with victory at Bournemouth.
Williams arrived on a month's loan from Aston Villa on Monday and the 21-year-old made an immediate impact as he was on hand to convert Kem Izzet's pass.
Izzet then missed an open goal, while Mark Cousins was at full stretch to deny Bournemouth's Brett Pitman.
Colchester almost scored a second but Mark Yeates's free-kick hit the post.
Colchester: Cousins, White, Heath, Baldwin, Ifil, Izzet (Perkins 62), Dean Hammond, Jackson, Wordsworth, Vernon (Wasiu 78), Williams (Yeates 65). Subs Not Used: Gerken, James Hammond.
