Grimsby beat Chesterfield 4-1 in a penalty shoot-out to reach the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
Jack Lester had fired Chesterfield ahead before Nathan Jarman equalised after a fumble from keeper Tommy Lee.
Lloyd Kerry put Chesterfield back in front but Grimsby levelled when Danny North headed in and the visitors held on to take the game to penalties.
Jamie Ward and Phil Picken missed from the spot for the home side, while Grimsby scored their four spot-kicks.
