Arena left his role with the US team after the 2006 World Cup

Los Angeles Galaxy have appointed former United States coach Bruce Arena as their new manager.

Arena will take charge of a team which, despite the high-profile presence of England midfielder David Beckham, has not won in eight games.

The 57-year-old, who replaces Ruud Gullit at the helm, took the US to the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup and won two MLS Cups with DC United.

"My goal is to win championships and make our fans proud," said Arena.

"I realise we have a lot of work ahead of us and I am optimistic that with the support of management, our coaching staff and the players, we will move forward," he added.
