The Ayrshire-born defender began his career in 1972 when joined English side Ipswich Town as an apprentice
His form for the Suffolk club earned him recognition from Scotland, and he went on to win 11 international caps
The right-back was a member of the 1982 World Cup squad, making his final appearance for Scotland in those finals
Burley moved back to his hometown club Ayr United in 1991 after short spells at Sunderland, Gillingham and Motherwell
He returned to Ipswich as manager in 1994, taking them into the top flight after winning the play-off final in 2000
Awards and accolades followed as Burley led the Tractor Boys to a fifth-place finish in the Premiership and a Uefa Cup place
A poor start to the 2002 season sealed Burley's fate at Portman Road, but he turned up at Derby the following year
At Hearts, he briefly threatened to make the Edinburgh side serious challengers to the Old Firm of Rangers and Celtic
But off-field matters ended his tenure at Tynecastle and he moved to Southampton, where he came close to promotion
Two years after joining the Saints, Burley is prised away from the south coast to succeed Alex McLeish as Scotland boss
One of Burley's first jobs was to appoint Englishman Terry Butcher (left) and Steven Pressley as his assistants
His focus quickly turned to his first game, with Euro 2008 finalists Croatia set to provide the opposition on 26 March
With a number of players unavailable because of injury, Burley turns to Celtic's Stephen McManus to skipper the side
