Holloway column

Ian Holloway

The Plymouth manager gives his inimitable views on football and life in general in his weekly column.

This week he talks about his forthcoming autobiography, great wins for England and Scotland and drawing West Ham in the League Cup.

Ollie also gives his verdict on Led Zeppelin reforming and sharing a bathroom with five women.

OLLIE'S BOOK TOUR

It's got a cover, it's got pages, words, pictures - it's got everything. There's a real ugly bloke on the front cover but never mind that. It comes out on Monday but there's loads of copies in the bookshops already.

Ed: What bits should we look out for?

Read the front bit, then read all the next bits until you get to the end bit!

Cover of Holloway's autobiography
In all good book shops - and some rubbish ones

I thought they sent you a copy - you haven't even read any of it, have you?

Otherwise you'd know what to look out for - you'd have said: "What about that time when that happened and that happened?"

I've heard you've got a book out as well. It's the smallest one in the world, called 'The People I've Bought Drinks For'.

They're calling my promotion around the book stores 'Ollie on Tour' - it makes me sound like a rock star.

I'm going to put in some diva-style demands, but the best thing is you get a free pastie with my book, because of the sponsors. I don't know if the book comes free when you buy a pastie, though!

GREAT WINS FOR ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND

Magnificent. We teased the hell out of all our French players when they came into training on Thursday. There was quite a few Frenchmen with their bottom lips turned down and we were saying "Go on, Jimmy!" to them!

And what about England? Steve McClaren had some decisions to make with a lot of players injured and maybe some of the ones that were first choice shouldn't be any more. Maybe the press make them out to be bigger than they actually are.

Gareth Barry and Michael Owen
If it ain't broke...

Ooh, we can't not have Lampard playing - why can't we? Especially when we've got Gareth Barry playing like that.

I don't care who's fit for the next game - I wouldn't change a winning team. I don't give a monkey's about Rooney. Why should he replace Emile Heskey?

When was the last time he played as well as Emile did for England over these last two games? We had big and little against Russia and it worked a treat.

We had wingers and big, strong athletes at the back who defended properly and I thought it was Michael Owen's best game for England. If you take the goals away, he kept the ball, he linked things well and he looks a better player after his injury.

Well done Steve, well done everybody.

ENGLAND CRITICS

When did we ever have any real success instead of just talking about it? Oh yeah, 1966. And who was the manager strong enough to leave out? Jimmy Greaves. Who did the press want to play? Jimmy Greaves.

Sir Alf Ramsey said he thought Greaves was a great goalscorer but he didn't play for the team and we went on to win the World Cup.

Any chance these modern superstars could stop thinking how great they are and play like a team should?

Steve McClaren
Play it again, Steve

I'm fed up with people writing negative things. For Tony Adams to spout off about Steve McClaren in the paper the other day was a disgrace. I didn't see him winning too many games at Wycombe - did you?

Who are they to criticise? The one England manager who had any success picked a team that played as a team. On Wednesday we had a team that played for each other.

I've always been an England supporter, not a criticiser and I'll always be right behind the manager until he's not our manager any more. And that's how people should be.

MINI BREAK IN INTERNATIONAL WEEK

I went to Port Isaac down in Cornwall with my daughters, my wife and my sister-in-law. It's a wonderful place to go but I was on my own with five women!

I couldn't get in the bathroom so I was smelling for a week! How long do these women take in the bathroom? I can't get over it. I'm in there, bish bash, bosh, gone. Mind you, I haven't got much hair to muck about with.

WEST HAM v PLYMOUTH IN LEAGUE CUP

Come on the 'Ammers! I'd rather it be at home but beggars can't be choosers.

It's going to be a very tough match but I'll get to see Alan Curbishley again, who's a bloke I really like.

606: DEBATE

We did a charity thing a while back when I was manager of one team and he was manager of the other for two insurance companies and he won. I've never forgotten that so I've got to try and beat him this time. I owe him one.

LED ZEPPELIN REFORMING

They're not my bag really but they're very good at what they did. They must be about 160. For Christ's sake, make sure there's an ambulance on stand-by!

Led Zeppelin
Do you know any George Benson numbers?

I wouldn't mind going along to the concert. I had a bit of a one-track mind in the 70s so I was a bit naive about all that rock music.

I was into George Benson, Luther Vandross and Marvin Gaye who are right at the other end of the scale.

EU GIVE UP ON MAKING BRITAIN GO METRIC

Lovely. Am I a fan of keeping things the way they are? Just slightly. I like a nice pint, the trouble is I struggle to hold it because the pint glass is nearly as big as me.

PUNTER'S QUESTION

Scotty PAFC20: "Barry Hayles is 35 and looking as fit as he ever has. Have you ever tried whatever he is taking?"

No. I've always been fitter than him!

PUNTER'S QUESTION II

Seamanlegend: "Hello Ollie. I'm from Croatia but I've been watching British football for the last 10 years and I know a lot about it. I'd just like to say I think you should be knighted for your managerial contribution to English football. 'Sir Ian Holloway'...it sounds just fine!"

He's mad, isn't he? Tell him he should be locked up. I can understand why Sir Alex has been knighted, but not me. Thank you very much and keep taking the tablets.

Ian Holloway was talking to Chris Charles.
