Kevin Nolan column
Kevin Nolan column
By Kevin Nolan
Bolton captain

The season is almost over and it is time for a little reflection.

Bolton are close to securing a place in Europe, a feat which would cap a fine season for the club.

But lots else has happened beside the push for a Uefa Cup place - and here are a few thoughts about what I made of it all.

Best/worst thing about this season?
The best thing has been signing a new contract with Bolton. The worst? All the games we have lost. There is no worse feeling than losing.

Funniest incident of the season?
This probably involved Sam Allardyce. Goalkeeper Ian Walker kicked the ball out of goal in training and Sam tried to control the ball on his chest.
Former Bolton manager Sam Allardyce
Allardyce took a slow but definite tumble backwards
He was running backwards to get into position and slowly but surely lost his balance and fell on the floor. Our training sessions are videoed so the evidence must exist somewhere.

Best/worst dressing room?
The best dressing room I have been in is Arsenal's. The worst has to be at Watford. It is just too small. You don't have the space to get changed without bumping into someone and it can get a bit smelly.

Plushest players lounge?
I have not been in too many so I'll say Bolton's.

Most miserable match to play in?
I'd have to say our 1-0 win at Watford. It really was a terrible game - one of those that even during the match I had the sense that it must have been awful to watch.

Best opponents?
Manchester United. They trounced us home and away and were absolutely magnificent. They are worthy champions. Wayne Rooney was probably the best individual we came up against - he scored five goals in the two games.

Worst kit?
Blackburn Rovers. It just is.

Worst boots you've seen?
Abdoulaye Meite has recently got some horrible yellow boots. His white ones are fantastic but we're not yet ready for yellow.

Worst haircut?
There are three Polish youngsters at the club - Jaroslaw Fojut, Blazej Augustyn and Przemyslaw Kazimierczak - and they have all come into training this week with identical new haircuts. They are awful - tints, streaks and bits of bleach. Two of them are central defenders and they look ridiculous standing alongside each other.

Worst journey to/from a match?
The trips back from London on the coach are awful as they seem to go on forever. The worst of the season was probably last weekend after our defeat at West Ham. Had we won we would have been celebrating clinching a place in Europe.

Best referee to have a laugh with?
Referee Howard Webb
Webb is a referee you can have a laugh with - honest!
In defence of referees, there are quite a few that I feel players can communicate well with and share a bit of a laugh. Howard Webb, Alan Wiley, Phil Dowd and Uriah Rennie are all good and open to a bit of banter. I won't mention the referees about whom I have got negative things to say.

Best wind-up of the season?
Gary Speed has been the subject of a few jokes since his promotion to first-team player-coach. He had his clothes removed from his locker last week because the players thought he should change in the coaching staff's room. He did not train the other day because he had a sore neck and some players suggested he should change from his playing kit into coaching kit. He was not having any of it.

Most impressive mascot?
I must go for Bolton's Lofty the Lion. He is definitely the best. Lofty is great at getting the crowd going.

Funniest chant?
It has amused me for some time that Manchester United fans have a chant about Gary Neville being a Red who hates Scousers. Of course, one of their best players, Wayne Rooney, is a Scouser.

Noisiest player?
I would go for Gary Speed, but then again he thinks I am the noisiest, or at the very least the player who moans the most.

Worst attempt on goal by team-mate/opposition player?
This would have to go to Manchester City's Joey Barton. He was in good form when City came to Bolton but he missed from two yards.

Best goal celebration by an opposition team?
I like the back-flips performed by the likes of Obafemi Martins and Lomana LuaLua. The sort of things of which I can only dream.

Weirdest thing said or happened in half-time team-talk?
Not that much happens at half-time that would fall into this category. There is a real focus during the break as the manager works through his points on a tactics board.

Who's the tightest player at Bolton?
With no doubt at all this goes to Tal Ben Haim. I think he is the tightest man I have ever met.

Who is the strangest bloke in the Premiership?
Jose Mourinho. He is a great manager and has been superb for the Premiership but sometimes I do not have a clue what he is talking about.

What would happen if you played a prank on Sam Allardyce? Has anyone ever tried?
You could have a laugh with Sam Allardyce as long as it was at the right time. Not that many players, though, want to risk winding up their manager.

Something you never expected to happen this season?
Sam Allardyce leaving the club.

What are your most looking forward to on your holiday?
Relaxing in the knowledge that we are safely in Europe next season. Then enjoying some time off and reflecting on my campaign and how I can improve.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Hey Kev, love the column.
What was your reaction to Liverpool defeating Chelsea in the Champions League and are you going to be in Athens for the final?
Joshua Proffitt, Canada

I was delighted for Liverpool. I was at the match at Anfield and watched the penalty shoot-out with Gary McAllister, who was jumping up and down. It was fantastic.

I have booked a flight to Athens but I have yet to secure a ticket.

Hi Kevin,
Love the column. Was there any humorous incident involving you and Big Sam Allardyce that you could tell us about?
Ashwin Ramesh, India

I remember a season or so ago we were going through our team shape in training. Sam Allardyce tried standing on the ball as Andrei Kanchelskis once did for Glasgow Rangers, putting his hand to his forehead as though looking into the distance. Unfortunately for Sam he ended up on his backside.

Hi Kevin - If Big Sam Allardyce returns to the Reebok Stadium next season with another club what kind of reception do you think your fans will give him?
Roger Smith, UK

I like to think that he would get a great reception. A lot of the fans are thankful of what he has done for Bolton and I would be surprised if he was given a bad reception. The main thing would be that he left without any points.

Kevin,
Who or what type of player would you like to see added to the squad for next season?
Martyn, UK

I would like to see the club spend a bit of money and bring three or four players in over the summer to add to the quality that we already have.

That would hopefully help us to push for a top-six finish again and maybe even get closer to the top four.

We need to make sure we sign strong players that will help us be a force next season. A couple of defenders, a couple of midfielders and maybe a striker if we can get one, though we have quite a good strikeforce at the moment.

Is it true that at the end of the season you do not have to train as hard because your match fitness peaks?
Jamie, England

I'm not sure this is true. However, there are more lighter sessions and the focus is on keeping the mind and body sharp.

If you are not match fit by the final stretch of the season then you have no chance at all. Also, if you don't know your jobs by this time of the year then you are in big trouble.
