Owen Hargreaves column
Kaka
By Owen Hargreaves
England and Bayern Munich midfielder

One of the good things about being at a massive club like Bayern Munich is that you never have to brood on a defeat too long.

We were obviously bitterly disappointed not to progress against AC Milan on Wednesday night, but our focus quickly turned to Sunday's Bundesliga game against Bayer Leverkusen.

We need to win if we are to challenge for the title.

Milan deserved to progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League. We'd put ourselves in a good position with the 2-2 draw at the San Siro, but conceding after 27 minutes in the second leg really put us under pressure.

They quickly hit us with a second and defended extremely well after that.

Michael Carrick
Michael Carrick is a wonderful player with fantastic passing ability and a great strike

Milan are a patient team with great experience. Their players are fantastic technically and Kaka is a superstar, there's no doubt about it.

But having said all that, I think Manchester United will come through against them in the semis, especially if they can get a good result in Milan.

United were stunning against Roma. I can't even remember the last time I saw a result like that in the Champions League.

I do remember Monaco beating Deportivo La Coruna 8-3 in 2003, with David Prso getting four goals, but that was in the group stages.

To see a result of the calibre of United's in the knockout stages is very, very rare.

I watched the game live in our hotel in Munich with the rest of the Bayern players.

It was one of those nights when everything United did came off. Every time they shot it seemed to be a goal and Roma really didn't have a chance.

They seemed set up to defend. They didn't even have a genuine striker on the pitch, just Francesco Totti, who is more of an attacking midfielder, and still they got torn apart.

Any team with the players Manchester United have got going forward will be a threat.

Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo are incredible individual talents, their midfield is exceptional and they've got a fantastic goalkeeper and defenders.

But the player who probably impressed me most on Tuesday night was Michael Carrick, who played fabulously.

I know all about Michael's ability following our time together with England, and playing in the same position gives me a good appreciation of what he does.

He is a wonderful player with fantastic passing ability and a great strike. The two goals he got against Roma were absolutely breathtaking, especially the second one.

The Premier League is the strongest league in Europe at the moment and has been for some time

Any time a new player comes into a club it takes them time to adjust, but look at the success United have had this season. That only happens when all the players play extremely well.

The other semi, between Liverpool and Chelsea, is going to be extremely interesting.

They've played each other so often in the past, are very well coached and tactically astute.

It will be an extremely tight game and a mistake here or there will decide it.

It's obviously a great credit to English football to have three sides in the Champions League semis.

Without a doubt, the Premier League is the strongest league in Europe at the moment and has been for some time.

There are so many fantastic players there, big talents like Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo who are the type of players that fans want to see.

But saying that, football can change quickly and the other European leagues have big positives going for them.

Take the game between Seville and Tottenham on Thursday night as an example.

In the first half Seville played fabulous football in a very difficult atmosphere and deserved to win the game and the tie.

The top South Americans, the best Brazilians, are still most attracted to play in Italy or Spain and I think it will probably stay that way.

And my league, the Bundesliga, is very healthy. There are a lot of goals scored and the stadiums are always full.

I watch some big games in other leagues on TV and the stadiums are half empty, whereas no matter how big a game is in the Bundesliga, it's a sell out.
