Owen Hargreaves column
Owen Hargreaves and England manager Steve McClaren
By Owen Hargreaves
England and Bayern Munich midfielder

There have been a lot of things said and written about the England supporters' negative reaction during Wednesday's game with Andorra.

I do understand the reaction of the crowd - we are England and we have to win matches.

Arguing with JC Toscano of Andorra during Wednesday's game

It was goalless at half-time against Andorra and I think it was a normal reaction for the crowd to be booing. We are expected to win those games and put in a good performance.

And as players, we have to take what comes our way, whether we are playing in a stadium with 70,000 supporters cheering or booing you.

It is right that fans have their own views about the way their team is playing, just as us players will have our views in the dressing room.

Actually, I didn't think the atmosphere was particularly hostile during our match against Andorra on Wednesday. I have seen much worse than that.

In fact, there was hardly anybody in the stadium. So in that sense it was unique as our games are normally played in full stadiums.

Regardless, my job is to go out on the pitch and help my team win the game.

In the second half against Andorra, I thought we played good football in difficult conditions.

I think that the way our opponents set out to play and the referee not having control of the game also contributed to the fans' negativity.

The game was difficult - as had been our match against Israel on Saturday, when we completely controlled the game and had chances to win it but could not score.

I thought the first half against Andorra followed a similar pattern, and that was frustrating.

Andorra defended with everyone behind the ball and tried to just kick the ball away and play for a draw.

Yes, we had envisaged the match would start differently to that.

But I think we changed things in the second half, we were more positive, we moved the ball quicker, we played better football and we deserved the goals when they came.

And in the two games I don't think Israel or Andorra had a shot on target, so defensively we did a good job.

We kept two clean sheets in two games, although possibly we could have scored more goals.

However, had we won in Israel by a couple of goals - as we could easily have, had we taken our chances - then no-one would be complaining.

Some fans may be disappointed or frustrated but that does not affect what is going on in the dressing room.

Of course we would have liked six points from these two games.

Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are two of the top five midfielders in the world

We tried our best to get three points in Israel but we could not, so you just have to accept the one point.

It should be said that Israel have drawn at home against France and Switzerland. They are a team that has improved dramatically. They are not a pub team.

Quickly, we had to put that game behind us, and we did by getting three points in Andorra.

We are still confident of qualifying and have put ourselves in a decent position to qualify for Euro 2008.

As for my own performances, I enjoyed playing the matches and I thought we did well defensively.

My strengths are to play that way, to protect the back four and get the ball to people in positions where they can create something.

Really, my role in the team doesn't change that much regardless of who I play with in midfield.

I have played with a number of different players in the midfield. When I first came into the England set-up I played with Paul Scholes in there.

And whether it has been Scholes, David Beckham, Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard, we have an abundance of talent in there.

On Wednesday it was Stevie G and myself playing in the midfield, and Aaron Lennon also moved into the centre later on and Stewart Downing was also in the midfield.

All the players did a good job. It is not just about the two players in the centre of midfield.

However, I thought Stevie G took his goals against Andorra extremely well and he showed again that he is an exceptional talent.

He and Frank Lampard are two of the top five midfielders in the world and we should feel very fortunate that we have them in the England team.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Which is the best stadium you have played in - and which has the best atmosphere?
Larry O'Donnell, UK

The best atmosphere was at Celtic Park - the crowd noise was amazing. But the atmosphere is usually more about the game than the stadium, so I would also pick out my experience of winning the Champions League final in Milan and many big games for England.

As for the actual stadiums, I think Milan's San Siro is beautiful and I also like Real Madrid's Bernabeu, Barcelona's Nou Camp, Manchester United's Old Trafford and the Allianz Arena in Munich, of course.

Do the Bayern Munich fans have a chant for you?
Sam Fiske, England

Crowds in Germany don't tend to be as creative as English fans, and I don't think I have a song specifically for me. Mostly it is just general chanting from the fans and banter between opposing fans.

But should it ever happen, I wouldn't mind having my own song - I'd just hope it was a good one!

Like many Canadians, I follow your career at Bayern and England with great interest. What do you think about Canadian football - do you follow it?
Bruce Nicol, Canada

My schedule is so busy that I don't have that much time to follow Canadian football. I grew up in Calgary and was well informed when I was there but that was a little while ago.

But one of my best friends is the Canada captain and there are a couple of other players on the team who I know and used to play with when I was a kid.

What do you think would make football big in North America?
Mabs Alam, UK

I think it is very difficult in North America, because football ranks as probably only the fifth most popular sport. There is so much competition for kids' attention - you have baseball, basketball, American football etc

Other sports have priority and there is not a lot of money invested in football there. I think it will take a long time for football to be able to compete with the bigger sports.

Who is the best player you have played with - and the best you have played against?
Alain Grimaitre, Switzerland

Playing against Zinedine Zidane was incredible. He was a step ahead of everyone else, he controlled exactly what happened on the pitch. He was absolute magician with the ball. He was really difficult to play against because it was so tempting to sit there and be mesmerised by him, admire his skill and completely forget you had to be getting stuck into him!

One of the best I have ever played with is Paul Scholes. He has such a sharp football brain and was also a great trainer and a great professional. I thought he was the best player in England training every day. He is such a clever player - he can pass, tackle, shoot, score tremendous goals. He was great to play with and also to watch. I certainly looked up to him when I first joined the England squad.
