Beckham's deal will suit him and LA Galaxy |
LA Galaxy president Alexi Lalas says David Beckham is worth his multi-million dollar move and could revolutionise football in the States. Beckham, 31, will move to Galaxy from Real Madrid at the end of the season in a five-year deal worth $250m.
Lalas said: "He's worth every penny, since we announced the deal we've sold thousands of season tickets and shirts.
"He will help revolutionise Major League Soccer economically and from a football point of view."
Beckham's mammoth deal includes bonuses and endorsements, and Lalas admitted: "It is a deal from which both parties will benefit.
"He has given the club a lot although he hasn't even played yet. If you want something great, you have to pay for it.
"He was England captain and shone at Manchester United and Real Madrid, two of the world's biggest clubs.
Galaxy's merchandise sales have soared since Beckham's signing |
"He is one of the best players in the world, but he will have to fight for his place here.
"If he doesn't perform, he will have to go on the bench like anybody else.
"We play a 4-4-2 system and although he plays well on the flank, I have thought about playing him in the centre because he works so hard. From there he can play long and short passes."
Although Beckham's first-team opportunities at Real look remote, Lalas said the former England captain is not looking to join up with Galaxy early.
Lalas said: "I would love for him to come in April but he told us it was very important to him to complete his contract with Real.
"We will wait for him with open arms in the summer."
