Scunthorpe advanced to round two of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with goals from Robbie Foy and Jim Goodwin. Foy put the Iron ahead with his first goal for the club after ex-Bantam Steve Torpey squared the ball into his path.
Bradford had debutant Matthew Clarke sent off for triping Daniel McBreen and Goodwin scored from the penalty spot after 72 minutes.
Substitute Joe Brown pulled a goal back for the home side three minutes from the end to spark a late rally.
