Given came off the worse in the accident with Harewood |
Newcastle keeper Shay Given said he passed out moments after picking up his abdominal injury after a clash with West Ham striker Marlon Harewood. The 30-year-old Republic of Ireland international needed emergency surgery on a small tear to his bowel after coming off in the game on 17 September.
"I was stretchered off and thought it was easing," he told the club website.
"I had a shower, got hit by a pain and then passed out for nine or 10 seconds, probably from my body shutting down."
Given added: "The surgeon said it was like someone pouring acid into your stomach, that is the sort of pain I was feeling.
"I have had injuries before but never pain like that, so it was pretty serious."
Given was rushed to hospital after he collapsed and where he spent a week following his surgery.
Steve Harper has been deputising for Given between the sticks, with the Irish keeper likely to be out for another month.
Meanwhile, Newcastle striker Albert Luque will play for the reserves on Tuesday in an effort to challenge for a first-team place.
The 28-year-old Spaniard, who joined the Magpies for 9.5m from Deportivo La Coruna, is in the side to face Liverpool at Wrexham.
England midfielder Kieron Dyer, who is close to a return to the first team following a long-standing hamstring problem, will not play.
