Will Rooney feature in Germany? |
606 message board users are split as to whether or not they believe striker Wayne Rooney can be fit for this summer's World Cup. With Fifa's showpiece tournament set to start in six weeks, England have been rocked by the news that Rooney has fractured a metatarsal bone in his right foot.
The 606 message boards have been deluged with fans discussing Rooney's injury and the consequences it may have for England's World Cup hopes.
Opinions are divided as to whether the Manchester United striker will recover in time to play any sort of part for England - and if he doesn't, if England can still win the trophy.
Obviously it's a blow and it's understandable to be pessimistic, but I reckon he can play a part in the World Cup. To keep it in perspective, the World Cup final is just over 10 weeks after his injury - more than enough time to get reasonably fit. We should also remember that he is only 20 and at that age you heal quicker than someone older.

Providing nothing goes wrong during his rehabilitation then he should definitely be in the squad - it's a risk we need to take to give ourselves a better chance of winning the World Cup.

I would rather take a one-legged Rooney than the rest of the strikers put together!

I don't want to sound pessimistic but I seriously doubt England's ability to get to the last 16 without Rooney. Both the national team and United are over-reliant on Wayne, although that is understandable given his quality. I really do think it's going to be a battle in the group stage without him, he's the one player that sets us apart from the other teams in the group.

He was told it took weeks to heal last time, but it took three months; Owen was told weeks for the same injury, he played his first game in 2006 yesterday and he still isn't 100%. We have to try and grasp the fact that Rooney will miss the World Cup.

I strongly disagree that England can't get to the last 16 of the WC without Rooney. Fair enough, he's irreplaceable as a like-for-like player but look in the England dressing room and there's a wealth of world class players from back to front.

I think Rooney shouldn't be any involved in the first round games. England could cope without him as there is still Owen, Defoe, and one or two of Bent, Beattie, Crouch, Vassell or even Dean Ashton or Marlon Harewood.
Another alternative could be to play Joe Cole behind Owen, and play Stewart Downing on the left. And, if England avoid hosts Germany in the second round, Rooney could be further rested and given time to fully heal and get his fitness back.

Given the way Sven included Beckham when unfit in 2002 and Owen in 2004, I imagine both Rooney and Owen will probably make the squad unless their doctors say 'no chance'.

Rooney has absolutely no chance of being fit in six weeks. I'd give it 10 weeks before even putting him in rehab.

For anyone who doesn't know much about damaged foot bones breaking the second, third or fourth metatarsal, as Rooney has gives a much quicker healing time than breaking the first or fifth (as he did previously). After that it's a case of getting his fitness back up, and if anyone can play on less fitness and mostly guts and determination it's Rooney.

We can beat Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago without Rooney, possibly meeting an over-rated and under pressure Germany team in the second round - remember we beat them 5-1 last time around.
Don't give up now - Rooney is only one player, and he hasn't performed to his Euro 04 standard since his injury in Lisbon, yet England still qualified as group winners
