Bellamy on a slippery slope
Sheffield United boss and BBC Sport columnist Neil Warnock

Craig Bellamy's bust-up with Graeme Souness is obviously now very much in the public eye.

And with the Newcastle chairman supporting the manager it does seem that Craig is on a slippery slope.

Over the years I think players do tend to get in some situations and probably regret how they handled them at a later date.

I think all managers like to keep everything behind closed doors but unfortunately in the modern day it's virtually impossible to keep anything secret.

Once it's out in the open you have to say it as it is, and in this case it's obvious that both parties differ in their viewpoints.

In the past I've had disputes with players and as a manager you do tend to think that you'll let the player go rather than take away some of the team spirit which you think might be getting damaged.

But it's difficult when it's one of your better players.

When it's not you don't give tuppence about it and you just offload them straight away.

But in this particular case then if it's got to be done I would imagine there'll still be three or four clubs who will be glad of signing Bellamy in the next week.

I can't personally see how this rift can be healed with just a handshake

I don't think Craig's self-belief is a bad thing - strikers are a different breed.

They come out with a lot more because they believe in their own ability.

But obviously he has got some flaws because of the problems he has been in in the past disciplinary-wise.

We all have problem players. Some of them can't take a drink when they go out and get into trouble, some of them get into trouble with women - it's all sorts.

We have to handle those situations. That's what a manager's job is - it's like having 25 children to look after and they've all got different attributes.

But I've never had anyone in my career refuse to play a certain position for the team.

I've had the odd player that's vehemently opposed to it, and has told me strongly that he isn't happy playing where I want him to play - and it wouldn't change my mind - but I've never had anyone refuse.

Take Andy Gray for example.

In certain games this season I've asked him to play wide for me and he's not happy playing wide.

I can't see Craig wanting to apologise for too much and I can't see Graeme doing the same

But he's not unhappy in that he's taking his bat and ball home. He's unhappy in the fact that he doesn't think he can contribute to the team from that position as much as he does when he's up front.

When I've played him there he's actually done the best he can. Never in a million years would Andy ever say to me "I'm not playing gaffer." That's just not in his make-up.

But on the other hand I can also see that as one of the best strikers in the country Craig has got to be disappointed that basically he's played 20 times this season on the right wing.

It is not easy to play out there when you're a centre-forward. And I do think sometimes that you think you're letting your own team-mates down.

Possibly he's done well to play 20 games in that position.

But I don't think we on the outside can know the ins and outs of the situation. It can only come from the inside story.

We don't really know what's happened over those 20 games.

The only thing I can say to Craig is that I can't see him getting a much better club than Newcastle.

Going public and getting all this media coverage may be a way out for him but he will be very lucky if he does get a bigger club.

I can't personally see how this rift can be healed with just a handshake. It does appear have gone too far down the line.

I can't see Craig wanting to apologise for too much and I can't see Graeme doing the same. It would have to be a massive turnaround by one party to get them together again.

And with Craig having two-and-a-half years left on his contract, chances are that it will end up with him leaving the club unless there's a vast change in direction from one of them.
