Fifa revives Club Championship
Fifa president Sepp Blatter
The tournament is the brainchild of Fifa president Sepp Blatter
Fifa has unveiled plans to hold the World Club Championship in 2005 in North America, Central America or the Caribbean.

The tournament has had a rocky history since the inaugural event in 2000, when Manchester United competed as European champions.

Their participation provoked much controversy because it came at the expense of their involvement in that season's FA Cup competition.

The following year's championship was cancelled because of financial problems and an overcrowded calendar.

The 2005 event will take place on 17-31 July and will involve 16 clubs.

Fifa said it hoped to hold the event every two years with Asia playing host in 2007.

The World Club Championship is the brainchild of Fifa president Sepp Blatter.

But the boss of world football's governing body has come under fire from top European clubs who claim that the calendar is already too congested.
