World Cup stars one year on
| Brazil won the 2002 World Cup | The World Cup final in Japan took place exactly one year ago. Just before Brazil's win over Germany, Fifa named its All Star squad of the tournament's best players. But how have the heroes of the 2002 World Cup fared over the last 12 months?
Goalkeepers Oliver Kahn (Germany) Solid as always on the pitch but spent much of the year escaping the German media after they revealed details of his affair with a barmaid. Rustu Recber (Turkey) The Turkish goalkeeper has been linked with several clubs and looks set to complete a transfer to Barcelona from Fenerbahce.
Defenders Roberto Carlos (Brazil) Remains a key player at Real Madrid and continues to terrorise opponents with his blistering breaks forward and trademark free-kicks. Sol Campbell (England) Had another assured season with Arsenal but, crucially, missed the end-of-season battle for the Premiership, which the Gunners lost to Manchester United. Fernando Hierro (Spain) The uncompromising defender spent a further season at Real Madrid, winning the Spanish title, but is past his prime and is set to leave the Bernabeu after 14 years. Hong Myung-Bo (South Korea) The South Korean defender's World Cup was his fourth and best. Left Pohang Steelers after the tournament for Los Angeles Galaxy. Alpay Ozalan (Turkey) A nightmare 12 months for the Turkish defender. Had a huge bust-up with Aston Villa manager Graham Taylor and spent the Premiership season watching from the sidelines.
Midfielders Michael Ballack (Germany) Transferred from Bayer Leverkusen to Bayern Munich. Leverkusen were almost relegated and Bayern won the German league. Remains Germany's key player. Claudio Reyna (USA) A series of injury problems have plagued the American defender. Was hardly able to play any part in Sunderland's battle against relegation. Rivaldo (Brazil) The Brazilian superstar left Barcelona for AC Milan and promptly spent most of the season watching from the touchlines as the Italian team won the Champions League. Ronaldinho (Brazil) Endured a fractious season with Paris St Germain, falling out at various times with the club. Nevertheless, a wanted man, strongly linked with Manchester United and Barcelona. Yoo Sang-Chul (South Korea) The midfielder, with more than 100 caps, still plays for Kashiwa Reysol in Japan. Recently played in South Korea's friendly win over Japan.
Forwards Ronaldo (Brazil) After announcing his return from years of injury, the Brazilian striker joined Real Madrid. After a slow start he eventually found top form and scored key goals as his team won the title. El Hadji Diouf (Senegal) The young Senegal star joined Liverpool but struggled on Merseyside, scoring just three goals in 29 league appearances. Hasan Sas (Turkey) Linked with Inter Milan, Monaco and Fenerbahce after a brilliant World Cup, but the forward's form suffered. Recently ended months of speculation by signing a new deal with Galatasaray. Miroslav Klose (Germany) Led the golden boot chase for most of the World Cup with a spate of headed goals. Still at Kaiserslautern but linked with a move to Bayern Munich.
