Scott Shearer has been tipped for a big move for some time

Shearer travelled to the Midlands on Wednesday for talks and a medical with the English First Division outfit.

The 23-year-old has agreed terms and should sign a contract at Highfield Road on Friday, subject to the medical results.

Shearer impressed City goalkeeping coach Alan Hodgkinson during a trial earlier this year and manager Gary McAllister has moved to beat off competition from several other teams.

The young keeper has had trials with Celtic, Everton and Sunderland this season and has helped Rovers challenge for promotion from the Scottish Third Division.

If the transfer goes smoothly, Shearer will return to Coatbridge for the season run-in before moving south in the summer for pre-season training on 1 July.
